The Geography of Smells

Is there anyone else who traveled once, later bought goods (shaving or otherwise) from there, and found the fragrance to practically take them back to the place? I just got my Arko and it is one of a few smells that I remember from spending time in Turkey as a young man. Anyplace where there were toiletries, they gave off a most basic-soap type fragrance. There was also a lemon cologne that people used to put on themselves regularly, such as after boarding buses. On another occasion years ago, someone presented me with a gift I had sent which had the smell of the particular town embedded in the fabric. I find that smells bring back a more acute sense of recollection than do pictures. One other time I'd heard mention of the phenomenon was a well-traveled geography professor who said different places had different smells, and he could teach an entire course on "The Geography of Smells".
