Thayer's? Whats it do?

Never used which hazel, anyone explain how it works and what it does? My father always had it around, figured it was for cuts.

You'll read a lot about witch hazel (Thayer's, etc.) on here. I did, and that's why I bought a bottle. After using it a while, I decided plain ol' generic drugstore brand did the same thing for a lot less $$$$, THEN I realized there didn't seem to be any benefit or need for it at all. Now I keep it simple and just use aftershave and don't miss the WH a bit.

It feels good, it smells good. It doesn't ever sting or annoy or aggravate. It seals and tones. It is all the good-for-you parts of aftershave (as opposed to the sexy, fun alcohol, menthol, big scent part).

I like using witch hazel to clean any little nicks or weepers. Not a lot of those (fortunately), but it's a good idea to apply something that kills possible infections.

I just bought Thayer's witch hazel last week and used it today for the first time. I have not seen any special effect. It doesn't sting like alum so may be it doesn't repair small cuts (though I had no cuts this morning). The smell looks strange the first time but is very faint. My skin was very smooth after shaving but I don't know if it is because of Thayer's of because I had a CCS.
I'll say I am not impressed but as it is my first use I'll use it for one or two weeks more to see if it is worth to be included in my daily routine.

It's an astringent. It can be used as a skin toner, or for first-aid. Hmm... maybe those are the same thing?

Mantic recommends witch hazel as an aftershave treatment, in between the warm rinse and the cold rinse. That works well for me, too.

The above link should probably be: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witch_hazel_(astringent)

Also, see the entry in B&B Wiki: http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/index.php/Witch_hazel

I found the Thayer's Lavender and gave it a shot. It doesnt smell like the traditional lavender products like the shaving creams etc. I also noticed it has no alcohol which is a good thing I understand because that would sting and dry out the skin.
I also found another brand of which hazel by TN Dickenson that does contain some sort of alcohol. I also came across the original Thayer's which hazel that would be unscented I assume and that also has alcohol in it so I avoided buying it.
Would those 2 mentioned not do the same as the lavender that has no alcohol?

I use the Thayer's Original and I quite enjoy it. It works well between the warm-water-rinse and the cold-water-rinse. Also works well as an aftershave. When I don't use it I find my skin doesn't feel as soft and supple... maybe it's all in my head but I like the product.

I like to apply Witch hazel on my entire face to give it a good cleaning... !
+1 ... I use Thayers Lavender everywhere above my neck, not just on the beard area. Its especially useful at toning up the bags under my eyes and wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes.

I use it everytime I wash my face, not just when I shave.

When shaving, I apply it BEFORE lathering, and after the shave.

Its also good at treating cuts on my hands. The last time I cut my thumb changing a blade, I soaked the bandage in Thayers, and the cut healed many times faster than it did the last time, when I didn't use anything.

Thayers may seem expensive at $10 a bottle, but its worth it. But I don't pay that much. I get mine at GNC, by shopping during sales and using their Gold Member card, I usually pay about $6 a bottle. I have enough in stock right now to get me through the next 12 months, easily.

You can read more about what makes Thayers so special (and see some of their other products) at www.thayers.com

How did the smell look? :tongue_sm I couldn't let this pass!!:001_cool:
Hum, it is difficult to explain. I don't know nothing that smell like that and my english is not elaborate enough to explain with words. The better I can do is to send you a few ml if you PM me your address. You will be able to smell and test it before buying.

What I can say is that, even if I was not impressed the first time, after two weeks I like it. I use it as RazoRock. I shave, rinse with warm water and apply WH. Then I take time to wash my brush and bowl then I rinse my face with cold water and apply cologne or AS. It is fresh, doesn't stink too much, cure small nicks and irritation very well and definitively let my skin smoother. I find it better than alum.

So, I'll say it is worth a try... :thumbup1:

I'm a big fan of witchhazel. I use the cheap Dickenson's stuff after every shave. If I want an aftershave splash, I'll put it on after it dries. It tones up the skin and I think it keeps my face pretty smooth. If I get any nicks, it stops the bleeding quickly because it constricts the blood vessels. That's why it's a common ingredient for those hemorrhoid pads.

So you wash the which hazel off before you put the a/s on.

After I wash off the shaving cream/soap with warm water, I them pat my face dry and then apply the WH. Then I clean up my shaving area, 1-2 minutes, then a cold water rinse followed by an Alum application. Then I usually floss and brush my teeth, apply my deo... then another cold water rinse on the face and a quick splash of AS and I'm out the door.

I'm not sure I understand why anyone would want to wash off the Thayers after applying it.

I leave mine on so the therapeutic effects remain, and then I apply ASL and/or ASB right on top of it. The remaining WH mitigates the sting of the ASL, and it helps the ASB to spread more easily and absorbs faster into the skin.

IMHO, you can't use too much Thayers. It is one of the few constants in my shave rotation ... no matter what else I use for pre-shave, lathering, and after-shave, every single shave (and non-shaving days, too) includes a generous amount of Thayers.

That's pretty much what I do, rinse face, Thayers WH, Humphreys WH, A/S, Balm

Can you tell that I love Witch Hazel, I have been Bewitched. :001_rolle
