TGN Finest or Silvertip

Currently I'm planning on building my own brush to upgrade from my current Tweezerman Brush as it is too scritchy and often irritates my face when I face lather. I've been looking at either the Finest or Silvertip knot from TGN but I can't decide and I need some help. I currently only use soaps and most people seem to really like the Finest knot for use with soaps but I'm not sure if it will be soft enough to not irritate my face. My concern with the silvertip though is that it won't have enough backbone to work well with soaps. If anyone can help me out it would be appreciated.

I suppose the answer lies in what kinds of soaps you use. I have a TGN super silvertip in my brush. While it is absolutely amazing with creams and soft soaps like Arko, it's performance with milled soaps is merely adequate. Then again, I use mostly creams & soft soaps anyway. So, I couldn't be happier with it.

This is another one of those YMMV thing in my view. I have several of the TGN Super Silvertips grade A from TGN in both fan and bulb configurations and find them to be very fine knots. I face lather soaps, creams and shave sticks. I find that they work well with hard milled soaps and in fact I have not found a product where they do not work well.

Doug

Finest is awesome, as is Superbadger.

The regular grade silvertip seems clipped to me, or like the hairs are poorly sorted as to which end is which.

General consensus on this forum is that the TGN Finest 2-Band XH is the best of both worlds. Soft, a little scritchy, and plenty of backbone.

If you don't want scritchy, I'd suggest you skip the Finest. Also skip the Silvertip and go on and get the Silvertip Grade A. You will get soft and won't have to give up backbone for it. It is good and dense and will feel like a cloud on your face without being floppy, if you set it at a good loft of 50mm or below. That loft will vary by knot size. Super Badger is good, too. Silvertip doesn't suck, it's just not nearly what the Grade A is.

Thanks to everyone for the help. I think I will just go with the finest, and even it is a little scritchy it will still probably be significantly softer compared to my Tweezerman. I'll be sure to post pics when the brush is finished.

If the Silver Tip Grade A would have been one of the choices, that's different. I really like that knot and it just might be my personal favorite.

If you go with silvertip, get the grade A, the standard silvertip has more scritch than best. My vote would be finest.
