Tatara Masamune - Best Blade?

I’d go with a Gillette Silver Blue or sharper. Bic would be a good choice.

those come packaged with a feather for a reason!

I had one - even had all the base plates and bought a nodachi cap… best combination for me was always the original Masamune configuration.

Blades like a Parker or Derby Extra were ok - going ATG would leave a little irritation. I have a really light and scraggly beard, so not much to mow down.

I used Astra SP mostly with it - that gave a little feedback, I could feel the blade tugging on the whiskers just a little, but it cut enough to not require too many passes. The duller blades helped me learn the angle pretty quick that way.

The biggest problem I had was using too much pressure with that one - easy to do.

I always wondered if I needed a Nodachi cap and that saves me some money, thanks!

@cakaguna How is the build quality of the razor?
I can't speak for him, but the quality is top notch. I don't have the closed comb, but the open comb is very mild and efficient. Since there aren't any lather channels on the open comb plate, the lather flows through the comb and down. This also provides extra clamping since the blade is well supported from the cap and the plate, so no chattering. The weight of the stainless model is light enough that there's no need for the titanium, in my opinion.

Which blade do you find works best with such a mild razor?

With my lighter growth whiskers, I didn’t need the Nodachi cap, I stick to what is the most mild that works. The nodachi plate some people like, but the longer guard span caused irritation where the nodachi cap with masamune plate did not. It might be worth a try, if you can get a cap at a reasonable price.

It’s really really good. The threads and handle fit to the base plate are fantastic.

Things I noted - some base plates didn’t have as deep engraving for the logo/name of the plate. My original Masamune was pretty shallow/light. Not a big deal, it’s a cosmetic thing, but that should be improved on a razor of that price range.

There was a bit of variance in color/texture between the nodachi cap and the Masamune cap. The nodachi cap was a little rougher texture. You could *lightly* polish that down to match the Masamune finish. You only notice it compared side by side though.

it’s a great razor
