Talcum Powder and Aftershave?

I remember the barber I went to in the 1980's and 90's (who has retired with no one taking his place:sad:).

I remember him using the alum block, and then different aftershaves and lotions, but he also put some talcum powder in a brush and applied it.

What effect does that have? Should talcum powder be used or just aftershave?

This is my second week wet shaving, and I have been finishing off with some Aqua Velva.
With winter coming should I also apply some moisturizer after that? Am think of the Nivia balm/milk product.

Am looking to try different AS. The article describing the Bay Rums was great. I am thinking of getting Captains Choice and the classic Clubman Pinaud (for the old school barbershop scent).

Thank you

Ever notice how shiny your skin is after a shave? Talc reduces that shine. When I use it on my face, it is the very last step. I keep some talc in a clean, dry sock in a ziploc bag, and apply it to dry skin. If there is any visible excess, wipe it off with a clean towel.

A little talc around the neck also makes it easier to wear a tight collar, and talc anywhere on your body can feel nice in warm weather. When I was last in Thailand I saw that they even sell mentholated body talc.

In the USA the most widely available talc is Pinaud Clubman. But in the UK, the major producers of shaving tackle also offer talc in some or all of their house scents. I have used the D.R. Harris Arlington and TOBS Mr Taylor.

My dad used a aftershave talc made by Mennen. The last time I saw any was in the late 70's or early 80's. It was a tan, flesh-tinted talc and had a pretty good scent to it, as I remember. He used it to cut down on the facial shine, and it also left a pretty smooth cheek.

Thank you for the information. I think I will try some with my next order.

Look for a Marvy neck duster. There are a couple of styles, and competitors will also pop up in searches.

I got mine from Amazon, but some other places are cheaper.

You just sprinkle the talc into the brush, and it goes on very evenly. Just like the old barbers.

Thank you for the information on the Marvy Neck Duster. I have found them on Amazon, and a few supply stores. Will be getting on soon.
