Takami 52mm left hand model

So I wanted to take a break from my shaving cream formulating and decided to do what most of us do best, buy more razors. I ended up purchasing a takami 52mm left hand razor from aframestokyo and noticed a few interesting design features. Now let me start by saying I know virtually nothing of the japanese straights other than what I have read on these forums and online. It appears to have standard hollow grind on one side but on the other side ( the usually wedge shaped one) it appears to be slightly hollow ground also, I am wondering how this might affect the shave and more importantly sharpening. Once the razor comes in and I get a chance to examine it better I will post some pictures.

Sounds right to me, that is how they should be. I have a Takami also, they are great razors.

What your talking about is called an asymmetrical ground blade. This is the traditional grind for kamisoris. This an asymmetrical grind on my Brian Brown kami:

Oh ok, I knew that the side that goes away from your face was supposed to be hollow ground, I wasn't sure if the other side was supposed to be flat or slightly hollow. I've been reading everything I can find online and on B&B on honing these and everybody seems to have a slightly different technique. I also downloaded the Iwasaki honing manual translated by Jim Rion, if any of you can offer some tips of your own It would be appreciated.

I would suggest being very careful honing since it is your first one. My Takami is a single steel razor, as yours should be, so it's not as susceptible to extreme hone wear like vintage ones. But too many hard laps on low grit stone will still ruin it in a hurry.

Mine came pretty well honed and took just a few minutes on a coticule followed by some laps on my Jnat. YMMV of course.

Very nice razors, I would imagine those are very expensive.

Actually, IMO they are very reasonable considering it was forged from 1/4' damascus stock, and then ground by hand to a design I had wanted. As more and more people start to order from Brian Brown customs the prices will inevitably inch higher. He has a rather long waiting list, so if it is something you might be interested in I would email him pronto :).

Hmmmm........those BB's are very appealing, the wife would kill me though. One thing that I have noticed getting back into wet shaving after so many years is the prices on everything seem to have gone up exponentially. Especially on things like DE's and straights. I would assume its the increase in popularity. Just the other day I was on ebay bidding on a feather travel razor, that thing ended up selling for around 30 bucks!!! If I remember right I bought one from classicshaving back in 2006 for practically nothing. Maybe that will be my excuse to the wife "its an investment"
