Synthetic vs badger brush

Although I am just a beginner and have still a lot upgrading to do, this morning I used my new badger brush for the first time.
The first brush was a synthetic one from the Body Shop. When used, I always felt like it was stinging me. Now a Lijun Finest Badger Hair Shaving Brush - Faux Ebony handle. The loading was a bit more heavier to do. But once done and after lathering in a bowl, it felt very nice on the face and neck.
Much softer, no stinging. great difference between a synthetic and a badger brush. So if any new starters are looking for a nice cheap badger brush, I would suggest to look up the lijun at Bay.

the synthetic you tried was probably not a good one. Synths have come a LONG way, and some seriously rival the best silvertips now.

You might find the same level of improvement as you try other grades of badger from various makers.

I understand what you all mean! Just meant for a beginner like me, not to fall into the trap: I will buy a cheap synthetic first quickly. While a same priced budget brush is much better already.

I just (a couple of minutes ago) gave into my AD again (aquisition disorder) and purchased the Muhle 33 K 257 new generation silvertip synthetic brush in ivory. It has garnered some very favorable reviews with one being passed around and reviewed by members here. Convinced me to get one. It will be interesting to see how it compares to my Super Badger. Not all synthetics are created equal...to say the least. :)

I enjoy my Body Shop brush, it is the softest brush I have, I don't think it is capable of stinging me. When face lathering it can get bothersome at first due to it being so springy and bouncy but in after the lather begins to form things go well, YMMV. Though I wouldn't mind trying the Muhle out one day, to feel a synthetic that feels more like badger hair.

If you are spending less than $30 or so - the H.I.S. is pretty good for a synthetic. If you can afford to invest $75 or so...go with a nice Badger. You can get some pretty strong deals on B/S/T and save yourself a fair amount of money on a high quality Badger.

I started off with an Omega synthetic and then upgraded to a Muhle 33K 256 Silvertip Fiber synthetic. The Omega was workable but was simply light years behind the Muhle in quality and function. It's a fantastic piece of equipment. I've had no desire whatsoever to try anything else. So, for now, the Muhle cured my brush AD. (wish I could say the same for creams and aftershaves.....)

Nice! I am soooo looking forward to getting my Muhle 33K 256 in the mail. Ordered from Connaught just the other day.

The Muhle sounds interesting, I might get one of the synthetic ones. I have the body shop synthetic, don't think is that poor quality, it's soft and gets the job done. Not top quality though, the finish is wearing off quite quick. Muhle have fine brushes, I own a boar one and is very nice.

The Muhle HJM black fibre synthetic brush has been excellent for me, and costs just $25, shipping included, at Connaught. It's done great with my wide variety of 20+ soaps. Connaught has very good prices on the entire range of Muhle synthetics.
