Superspeed Case Question

Among my collection of blue tips are two cases. I noticed that one of the cases says "LIGHT" on the lid, while the other says nothing. Just wondering if anybody knows when the superspeed cases included the "LIGHT", "MEDIUM", and "HEAVY" designation on the lids.

LIGHT will always be Blue, MEDIUM will always be a tan or brown color, and HEAVY will always be a red or maroon color, AFAIK.
I'm not sure when they started labeling the cases. If they were sold individually and not in some special package, they should have a sticker on the case.

Hi; In my own personal collection; The 1959 Blue Tip Razor Set, has the word "LIGHT" on the lid itself. My 1959 Regular Set does NOT have the word "MEDIUM" on it. but; does have the word "REGULAR" on the lid itself. This case is TAN. I have a "Rare" 1960 Heavy (F-1) Gillette "Red Tip" Set with the word " HEAVY" on the lid itself. Also I have a 1959 HEAVY Gillette Set with the word HEAVY, also on the lid itself. I remember the Gillette Jingle, from my early teens, with the words "LIGHT,REGULAR,AND HEAVY" with various athletes doing the commercials.(Mostly Baseball Players). I'm not sure if the British Rocket Type Regular Super Speeds use the word "MEDIUM"? I do not have these razors at hand to post pictures, but, I hope this is a little helpful.

I'm pretty sure the terminology is LIGHT, REGULAR (as opposed to MEDIUM), and HEAVY. I know that the early ones (1955-57 maybe) did NOT have the description on the clear lids, but rather on a cardboard insert inside the case. The later ones (1958-60 maybe) have the description molded on the clear plastic lid. The colors were always like Chris stated above (light blue, tan, and maroon). I'm not sure of the exact dates of when they changed from the cardboard insert to actually molding them on the clear lid.... the dates above are just a guess. The actual razors themselves went through some minor changes sometime during 1957 I believe, which may coincide with the changes in the cases..... maybe someone who knows more can verify this.

Thanks, Ben. That's kind of what I figured. I know about the color coded cases, and these two are identical, other than the work "LIGHT" on the lid. So the one without the word is probably earlier. Interesting!

Starting in 1954 Gillette presented the concept of Controlled razro adjustments in the Super Sped line up. The Light exposure SS

was for mainly for beginners newbie or sensitive skin shavers. It had the blue knob and in the styrene see through case with light blue base. The Regular SS

was for average shaver with no skin irritation issues or shavr issues. This one was first un-colored tapered knob and [ a few were tan colored] came in see through styrene case with tan color base. The heavy SS

was for those who wanted aggressive shaver and liked heft tonnage. This was geared for the toygh beards and skins. It came in see through maroon/red case .

Right, Alex, but my question was about two cased blue tips I own. One case says "LIGHT" on it, and one doesn't; both are identical otherwise. Nice pics of the Superspeed lineup, though!

Well, this is turning into an interesting discussion. But honestly, I only have blue tips, so really don't know what the other cases say. I just know my one blue tip case says "LIGHT", and one says nothing at all.

Still, learning all the permutations of the superspeed line is a lot of fun.
