Super Speed- Then What?

Been using my Super Speed for about a month and am happy with my new way of shaving. I have the bug and was wondering what you suggest should be my next DE to purchase. Have had no razor burns and only two weepers at the beginning. Use Feather blades (love them) and Taylor Avocado Shaving Cream, Proraso Liquid cream after shave.
Was thinking of a Slim adjustable, Merkur 34C, Fat Boy
Is the Fat Boy better to purchase then the Slim?
Don't know if one of these would get me a better shave.
Any other model you feel I should look into?
Thanks for your opinions.

Any of the three would be good - and you'll likely buy all of them eventually. So go with one you're interested in. The FB and Slim are similar in that they're adjustables, but different weights/sizes (depending on your hands/face type, one might work better than the other). But you can pick up a nice Slim cheaper than you can a FB, so why not give that a try? Then, in lieu of a Merkur, you could always go with a nice older Gillette Tech - a great way to try a 3-piece razor. In all of these, it's always, as they say, ymmv, but if you were to ask me, I'd say go with a 3-piece, such as a Tech or Merkur, then maybe try a Slim for your adjustable.

I have both a Fatboy and a Slim, and must say that while I get great shaves from both of them, the Fatboy edges out the Slim ever so slightly. The Fatboy seems to maneuver a little more intuitively for me. That being said, YMMV, and the Fatboy prices have gotten a little out of hand lately, unless you can scare one up in a local antique shop. Happy hunting!:biggrin1:

You could go older and see how your SS compares to a 40's SS, or try an open comb for some real variation. As far as Fat Boy v. Slim goes that would depend on weather you prefer a shorter thicker handle or, a longer thinner one.

Personally, I'd go for an open comb. Perhaps a NEW, or one of Merkur's open comb razors.

If you want an adjustable, I'd get a Slim. IMHO, Fatboy prices are a bubble.

This is a tough one. I'd say an adjustable is a good way to go to see how they work and whatnot.
I'm going to say that a 3 piece like a Tech is the next step. But you know that the steps between razors are very short. It's likely that you'll pick up both.

I'd have to say an adjustable also. I am partial to Gillette Slims. As insomiace said, beware of Fatboy prices. I would stay away from ebay Fatboys and only purchase one from one of our members on BST. You can still find great deals on Slims and they do come up on BST.

Depends on where your nose is.

That domed head on the Fatboy just doesn't get right under my nose.

The lower dome on the Slim, well Super Slim actually, works fine.

I started out with the superpeed (a 40s), too. Next in my line was the fat-handled (30s) tech. You could probably grab a bar-handled OC New for pretty cheap. On the whole, my suggestion is a 3-piece, next.

Good advice. +1!

Ya i'd go with like a gillette new improved or red tip. Both slightly more aggressive. Love those open combs though... just shaves differently from the bars. I'd hold off on the adjustables until later. But imo the slim vs fatboy... i prefer the slims cause of the longer handle and think it balances better.

If you want to try something different, then go open comb. It is a different experience and from my experience, requires a bit more attention.

Or if you want to stick to closed comb, get a Red Tip. Adjustables are fine pieces of engineering, but do love the shave that a Red Tip gives.

I would go with a Gillette Slim Adjustable. There are a lot of nice ones on ebay at reasonable prices, or wait for one on BST.

The Slim is my miracle razor! Seriously I don't think it is capable of a bad shave! I'm still going through a lot of sample blades, and no matter how bad a blade seems to be in one of my other razors, as soon as I stick it in the Slim, all the problems go away.
I like all my razors, but the Slim is quickly becoming my "go-to" razor when I absolutely need a no-nonsense quality shave.

Use the Fat, Luke!
I would get a Merkur HD. Fantastic razor, and still my favorite. The futur is a very close second.

Honestly, Merkur is so much better than Gillette (YMMV) that I would just go out and get one of those. The futur is a work of art and a true joy to use.

Are you talking about something like the Edwin Jagger 89L which also has my interest. Looks like a good razor and it would be my first new one.
Edwin Jagger or the slim. :confused1 :confused1 :confused1

The 89L is a 3-piece, so yes, that would align quite nicely with what I was saying. I don't have any non-Gillette 3-piece razors, but lots of folks seem to like the EJs. Seems like a good choice to me, based on what I've heard.

As for the slim, well, I'm becoming more an more enamored with the slim as time goes by (it's very maneuverable and comfortable to shave with), but it's leaving rotation at the end of the week, so I may find a new love.

Open combs are next for me, I think.

Thanks Chester for your insight. As a newbie I need the help. This forum is a great place to get it. This is a pleasant journey. I hope in time that I can return the info on what I found the best at least for me.

I've got the Fatboy and Slim - both are excellent razors. However, if the DE89L has your eye, give it a chance. They're miraculously smooth loaded with a Feather and the DE89L consistently gives me some of the best shaves I've ever had. I got mine for a few bucks over $30, and it's been one of the best shaving investments I've made.
