Super Speed difference?

They have varying blade gaps which can significantly give a different shave result from each razor. The Black Handled SS is a 64mm gap ( More aggressive) and the Flare tip silver handle SS is a 58mm ( less aggressive)

Thanks Alex, that was very helpful. I was thinking of getting a birthyear razor which would be a black handle but I like the look of the silver handle more. At least now I can take into account the aggressiveness of the razors as well.

The black handled SS is also a little lighter than the others. It's not a huge difference, but in my mind it contributes to the black handled SS being a little more mild than the earlier models.

They're variations on a theme, any differences are pretty minor compared to the difference between a SS and a 3-piece razor.
I like them both, you just have to adjust slightly to the different weight and angles.

If the black handle has a wider blade gap but is lighter, would that make it more or less aggressive than the silver handle SS?

All in all it's probably a wash. I find the black handle to be slightly less aggressive, but there's practically no difference. When paired with a sharp blade (I find Gillette Super Sharps work well), it's a great razor especially for a daily driver.

It should be pointed out that the blade gap alone doesn't determine blade exposure. It is possible to have a larger gap between the blade and the guard but actually have less exposure if the guard protrudes farther forward.

Also, very minor quibble:

The Black Handled SS is a 64mm gap ( More aggressive) and the Flare tip silver handle SS is a 58mm ( less aggressive)

Those measurements are 0.64mm and 0.58mm respectively, Alex. A blade gap around 6cm would be quite insane. :wink2:

Here's the wiki page where these are listed out, BTW, in case anyone else wants it. It should be noted that these measurements were taken by different people using unknown equipment, and should be taken with a rather large grain of salt.

OH....54mm is like 2 plus inches, i think that gap may be a tad too aggressive. Even though everyone uses the short cut version of 63mm vs 0.63mm....Thanks for the correction though.

There can be many factors and variances in head design or weight that can give various shave results. The protrusion of the guard as Porter stated and the weight of the razor all can make a significant difference in shave results. The blades and also face prep all are factors too.
