super excited feather ss

hi everyone as above i am super excited it was my b day yest and my wife/kids/in-laws got me a feather ss in green however the wife thought it would come with blades and obviously it doesn't the question is what blades should i get i feel pretty confident but up till now i have been using a Bic one blade razor since i was 16. (im 29) so was not sure about pro guard or not. also i need a cup a brush and some cream/soap but im on a proper tight budget at the moment with a house 3 kids and a wife there is not a lot of spare cash. firstly can anyone recommend a nice smelling soap/cream at a good price ( im in the UK ) a good cheap brush i was thinking e bay? and a cup not essential but would be nice. also blades e bay? amazon? shaving ie? i haven't looked yet thought i would seek advice before wasting time.

thanks for any input again im well excited. :biggrin1:

shaving.ie is great for blades and brushes etc

check out connaughtshaving.com they are in the UK and have a great range
as for soap/cream most supermarkets sell palmolive soap sticks for about .65p or palmolive cream for £1ish
asda have 'groomed' cream for not much as well.
boots have the real shaving company stuff too or check tk maxx if you have one near by as they sometimes have the higher end creams by Taylor of Old Bond St

My Feather SS came sealed with a package of Professional blades, so the idea that it didn't confuses me! If you are both new to the SS and straights in general, I will recommend starting with the Kai Captain Milds with blade guard. They are relatively inexpensive, sharp enough to do a fantastic job, have a nice shallow blade exposure and have the blade guard to combat plunging your extra sharp blade directly into your face. I can attest to having been a bit sloppy for less than a second and next thing you know I had the entire exposed blade in my chin! Congrats on owning a great razor, keep us informed on how your progress is going.

Hi guys and thanks for all your input. I will def have a look at those blades and the razor 100% did not come with blades I got it from shaving.ie. yesterday. I'm about to start another post as I was just looking at it and I think its damaged I have taken some photos and will try to upload them. Thanks again. Nathan

I tried the guard blades when I first started straight shaving with my Feather AC. To tell you the truth I thought the guard blades would really prevent any nicks or cuts. Of course they won't, and they really nicked me up at first. I really didn't like the guard blades, and I wouldn't recommend them at all. I've found the regular Feather Pro's or the super Pro's to be much better, and I'll take the regular pro's over the super's. Its all a matter of preference, but I don't recommend the guarded blades at all. I feel you'll have much better results with the regular Feather blades. Also the Kai mild's will fit your Feather and they are nice blades too. Try the guards if you must, but I think they might make you feel they're safer to use. They can still give you a nasty bite, where the regular I feel will almost force you into using more caution. Good luck with your Feather, that SS is a great straight. I have one of those too, the folding in black.

I'm with dpmtherrien, no guard blades (feather or kai) for me, they cost more and give me bad shaves. In order of preference for me: KAI mild, Super pro's, Dorco, Pro's. The light blades are also not worth the money. YMMV
I sold my SS razors (had a plastic SS folding and a Teakwood SS folding) because I love my DX's much more, I get much better shaves out of them but there seem to be a lot of people who prefer the SS so that's personal.
