I am interested in the idea of a birth year razor but I don't know much about vintage DE razors. From looking around the forum and web I like the look of the Gillette Super Speeds - Red Tip and Black but don't know if those were made in that year. What do you all suggest? I'd like something in nice shape but I plan to use it as well. Thanks in advance.

According to the ShaveWiki http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/US_Gillette_Dating_Information Gillette made 3 models during 1963, bearing Date Code "I" ... 3 piece Tech, Flare Tip SuperSpeed, and Slim Adjustable.
Of those choices, I'd recommend the Tech, but the Slim Adjustable will probably be easiest to find.

1963 Slims are very common. You'll have a harder time finding the Tech and the SS. I was born in 1962 and watched eBay for a long time looking for birth quarter razors. I think I only saw one Flare Tip in all that time and never a Tech.
I'd be more than happy to PIF you a '63 SuperSpeed.

I would go for the Slim. 1963 is my year too. I wound up with a 62 (H3). Close enough.

To answer the question about what I currently use it's a Jagger DE86 with the black octagon handle and I still have the Merkur HD that my parents gave me as a gift in the 80's and that I used for about 7-8 years before putting away my wetshaving gear until recently.

Nobody has mentioned the 1960s Aristocrat. I'm a L 1 is the 1960s Aristocrat is my choice for a classy birth year razor (although I confess that I do have all of them!)
