Suggest a DE Blade

So I've been wetshaving the old school way now for about a month and so far have only tried out two brands of DE razor blades, Merkur HD and Derby.

I've found that the Merkur gives an exceptional shave the first time I use a brand new one, but shaves 2-5 quickly get progressively worse over the week. With the Derbys, the shave isn't as good as a day 1 Merkur, but at least stays consistently pretty good up to days 4 and 5.

Are there any other particularly good brands to give a try? I currently have about 3-4 Merkur blades left, and about 90 Derbys (I bought a 100 pack for $10) so I'll have a while before I use what I have on stock up. I've heard good and bad from Feather, in that brand new blades give fantastic shaves but can definitely ruin a face too.

The best thing to do is order a blade sampler pack - every one has their own favorite. And remember that if you find something you like better than the Derbys that you can probably trade/sell them here.

+ 1 to the sampler pack. Its really the only way. I would at least try, Israeli Red Pack, Astra, Feather, 7 O'Clock Gillette, and Iridiums.

Definitely get a sampler pack. When I first started, I thought Derby's were going to be the love of my shaving life. But due to my sampler pack from west coast shaving, I've moved on to sharing the love equally between Red Packs, 7 o'clock greens, and Feathers, with Derby's bringing up the rear...

Everybody seems so hell bent on you getting a sampler pack, but if I were you (or me 5 minutes ago:whistling:) I would check out shaveabuck.com I just saw a post by the vendor and bought some blades for several reasons. 1) the sampler packs I saw at places like...well I won't name names... weren't that great of a deal because either the shipping was a lot or the pack wasn't much of a discount. 2) I couldn't find a pack with just blades that I really wanted to try. The shaveabuck guy has lots of top notch blades including both sharks and bluebirds (both 5 star blades on B&B review pages), 7 O'clocks, astras, personna reds, personna blues, derbies, and some others I don't remember right now. I just got 4 packs of blades for less than $10 SHIPPED, and if the claims are true I may get a refund on my $2.00 shipping as the vendor's post claims blades ship free.

I really enjoyed my blade sampler pack because one of the blades really surprised me in terms of how much better it worked for me, even compared to ones that everyone seems to mention like Feather and Derby.

Also - some of the really good reviews on razor blades explain what other blades have been similar for that particular reviewer. I suppose it's still heavy on the YMMV. I've been hoping someone could point out blades that are similar to Treet Platinum, but more widely available.

I can't say enough good things about Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Stainless and the Thai mfg Gillette Super Thins. VERY smooth blades and very affordable.

+1 on Sample pack

Feathers, Astra Superior Platinum, Crystal, Red Personna, Iridium Super

If you can get 3 of the 5 above, that would be good.

What kind of razor do you use? I personally like Derby for TTO Gillettes and Persona Red Pack for more aggressive razors. I like Feather for adjustable Gilltettes.

You can't go wrong with a sampler- you really need to see for yourself - but also realize the razor you use is a factor as well. And if the razor is adjustable or not.

Perma-sharp Super (B&B vendor Melyus)
Iridium, 7 O'Clock SharpEdge (letterk)
Shark (Melyus)

I would try the above in that order.
