Straight razor Starter kits-----how much should one cost?

Howdy guys! Hope I'm not in the wrong section but here goes...

I'd love to get into shaving with a straight razor. I have been using brush and mug all my life but sick and tired of mach3's or what not.

Exactly what do I need and how much should all of this run me? Just a basic starter kit would be grand. I'm sure I'll just build up from there on!

On a side note... who would of known there was such a big world for shaving out there? I seriously feel like an obsession starting to kick in :w00t:

Good question, im on ebay searches to take the plunge myself ! Fancy one of those Dovo straights but with that and strop etc, its not going to be cheap.

Best advice I got till now was to not cheap out on anything. I decided to save my money and go for a GOOD starter kit.

i would recommend you get a (roughly) $50 razor from the BST that strikes your fancy. buy from a seller who is willing to sharpen your razor for you before he sends it out. he should know what "shave ready" means and have it apply to your new razor.

then pick up a filly strop.

after 3 weeks send it out to a honemeister for a touch up.

if after the second three weeks you're still in love with shaving with a straight, pick up a finishing hone to do your own touch ups.

lastly, let your AD's sink in and really give way to them & aquire lot's of fun stuff!

If you want to buy something straight off a shop, I heard good things from Ruprazors (Shaveready straight + strop)

eBay razors are not recommended for new guys. The eBay definition of "shave ready", "excellent", etc. sometimes varies from our definition:001_rolle

Guys thats some great input, thanks!!!!!!

I did not know I could buy a blade and strop, and pay someone else to hone it for me!!! At the moment I can't afford a hone. this is perfect, I might be shaving with a blade sooner than I thought:w00t:

QEDUSA sells a starter straight razor that uses 1/2 of a standard double edge blade for replacement blades. The razors are reasonably priced and you do not have to use a strop or a hone. When the blade needs replacement you just break a DE blade in half (with the blade wrapper still on. From what I understand they snap in half easily. I have not tried one, but the QEDUSA website explains how to use them and answers questions. I looked it over, but decided I was not that adventuresome and bought a Merkur 34C instead.

Thanks for the advice ! Was thinking of some of the older ones with "shave ready " but modern, new and save a bit longer i think then.

If you are inclined to buy a straight, I'd recommend the BST here or a starter kit from Ken Rup or one of the sets from some of the other online vendors.

Enjo, and good luck :001_smile
