Straight Razor First Attempt

Well it was my first day with straight razor, and I have to say that it was okay. I have had a huge irritation problem with cartridges lately and that is why I switched. But I think the problem was that my razor was not sharp enough, I had the sight unseen deal from whipped dog, and I had to spend a little bit of time stropping it before it even came close to being sharp enough. Even with that though it became a slightly dull in the middle of the shave, hopefully it will go better next time and as my technique improves it will certainly become easier to maintain my edge, but there was a slight decrease in irritation, and I really enjoy how deliberate I have to be in order to shave this way.

I think his come shave ready. You might have dulled it by mis-stropping it- a common problem for us newbies!

Congrats on your first straight-razor shave, without mishap. My first was pretty dreadful. Others will surely weigh in here, but in the meantime, let me suggest that one reason why you think the razor wasn't sharp enough is because you were not pulling your skin taut enough with your off-hand. Your off-hand should be doing as much work as the razor is! Beyond this, there is also the possibility that you dulled the edge through stropping, or had the wrong blade angle when shaving, which may equal scraping. If there is a constant, it is that the Whipped Dog newbie edge is well respected in these parts.

Yep I agree that my technique is part of the cause but I did not strop before my first shave as instructed and I should have, after I did strop it, it passed the hanging hair test and it did not before, perhaps I am the odd man out when it comes to whipped dog honing, I am not bitter about it though, it gave me some practice and I am glad of that, I have nothing but good things to say about his service.
