Straight razor " feedback "

On my 3rd or 4th straight shave. This one was with a razor I purchased, restored and honed myself. Previous shaves had been with a " Shave Ready " razor that I had to touch up to get past the dragging and another I restored but did not have nearly sharp enough so I do not count it ; ) . The new razor gave WAY more feedback or feel than the first. Both are 11/16th and are both Half Hollow, well as far as I can judge. The extra feedback was so disturbing to me I cut myself three times before I gave up and switched back. Can anyone help with why the newer razor had so much more feel do other newer straight shavers find this unsettling as well?

Some of it was feel but it seems it was mostly sound. I know I am not being very helpful. Sorry.

This work? $razor grind.jpg

The razor is a Diamond Edge from Norvell - Sharleigh Hardware Mad in Germany if that helps one way or the other.

Nice grind. I typically hear the audio, but don't react to it. Hopefully some experience and you'll be past the issue.

Shaved with it again today. Was a mixture of sound and feel. T'was better after I honed the blade better. Did not freak out this time : )
Thank you all for the words.

Your full and extra hollows are going to have the most feedback. A sound like buttering toast, and you can feel more of the cutting of the whiskers. With a half hollow the sound will not be as pronounced. If properly honed the thicker grinds will be more like a wiping feeling than a cutting feel. Resistance (not uncomfortable pull or tugging) is common in the areas around the mouth and chin, where growth is normally thicker.

Thick Wedge or near wedge grinds are almost silent when cutting, and once again you will get that wipe off the beard feeling. Don't be afraid of the sound, it is an indicator of the razor doing it's job.

Sounds ( pun intended ) like I need to find something closed to a wedge. Everything I have seems to be full hollow or there about. Nothing near a wedge.

Sometimes when I use a full hollow after using one of my thicker grinds the sound gets to me to. Just to make sure its only the sound and not the edge being dull I usually shave a little bit with the faucet running that way I don't hear the razor as much. Try doing a full pass with the sink running and let us know how it goes.

Sounds like I need to trade my Imp 133 for a quarter hollow or wedge. Thanks for the running water tip. If I do not have to then pee while shaving or my wife yell at me for running the water that just might work ; )

I would advise against this. Red Imps are fantastic shavers. If you are interested in the wedge type grind try a Red Imp 132, which is a wedge. I used to have one and they are smooth shavers to say the least.

I personally like the feedback a hollower grind provides, but so far prefer the performance of heavier grinds (they seem to have an easier job taking off more hair on my chin in fewer passes). One of my favorites so far (I'm only about 30 shaves in) is the J.R. Torrey near-wedge, which shaves smooth and sure, but gives more auditory feedback than the two other wedges I have used.

I'd definitely give it some time before you trade away the razor--too early to tell what you'll get used to, what you'll like and what you won't in a dozen shaves or so. But I would recommend adding a wedge to your lineup.

If you cut yourself 3 times in one shave, there's something wrong with the honing... You may be confusing feedback with just a really rough ride.

Very possible drmatt357. Am around shave 10 now. Getting mush better. My issues are down to under my nose / upper lip area. I used a Torrey Frameback last night and have a new favorite razor.

different razors...different feedback..try a full wedge they barely make a "pink" if anything..lol...but since you rehoned the razor "better" the edge is almost there but not 100% IMHO...honing a razor needs to be "spot on" anything less will make the edge go downhill quick....rehone in the middle of a shave?..yep not shave ready yet...I know there are "singing" hollow ground razors that make alot of audio feedback when being used..almost like they are litterally singing and you hear everything...

No Styptic pencil needed for the shave last night. Finally learning to slow the hell down and act like a have a razor in my hand.

Thanks for all the pointers everyone.
