Straight Razor and airport security

Just curious if anyone has any knowledge or experience with straight razors and airport security.

I've seen posts on DEs, but not straights.

First thing that comes to mind is dont. If they flip out over something as deadly as a bottle of water I can only imagine what they'll do when they see a straight razor. Don't even think of doing carry on with it, pick up a wapi and check it with your luggage.

I packed 3 straights and a full compliment of accessories in my checked luggage when I flew, I had no problems. I boxed my shaving stuff and bubble wrapped the fragile items, then packed it.

My bags were searched by the TSA all 4 times I flew. I recommend writing a caution on the box stating the contents are SHARP, so some poor innocent TSA agent doesn't cut the crap out of himself.

I usually travel with one or two in my checked bag. No problems. Nothing valuable in case they go missing.

Cool. Thanks.

I get around a bit in europe and you never know when you might find a bargain. Last time I was in hamburg (before my SR obsession) I walked past a store that had hundreds of DEs and straights.

In a checked bag no problem. I usually travel with my Feather AC in the checked luggage. If you don't check bags and only do carry on, no way.

I wonder if a Feather AC would go through carry-on if the blade was removed and in the dispenser?

Don't, exactly. I check them and have for years without problem. I expect that, sooner or later, some knucklehead will decide he wants that which isn't his. So I don't bring anything which cannot be easily replaced.

I have travelled from the USA to Europe with a Feather AC japanese style in the carry-on with no blades inside, but your mileage may vary - it's perfectly harmless, but I read somewhere else on this forum that some people had trouble, so it may depend on the security personell you have to deal with.

I had an unloaded Parker shavette get confiscated in carry-on.

They let me take the dispenser full of Feather blades on board with me though....

I've brought stuff many a time in checked luggage no problems whatsoever.

I've sent a blade in the mail to my hotel and then carried the Feather on-board with no questions asked. I don't think a dispenser of blades in your carry-on would work at the airports I use (which is most of the US ones). TSA rules say "Razor-Type Blades" - that would mean the AC blades in the dispenser in any reasonable discussion.

I travelled around with straights in my checked luggage for a month or so without issue. My biggest concern was theft, rather than security having an issue with them. Hone up a GD and take that. You can always replace that cheaply and easily if it goes missing.

If you find any nice valuable straights on your travels it might be safer to post them to a friend at home.

I always check my shave gear when I fly, and that's anything razor related. Its worth it to avoid the hassle at check-in. I expect having to deal with getting my luggage at baggage claim, so I just plan for it. Doing this solves any problems with my shave stuff.:thumbup1:

If some TSA agent were to be so careless as to ruin the edge of my blade, I hope he loses a finger for his efforts.

I took a nice one with me once... just once. Nothing happened But I was forever worried about it. I now pack a GD (admittedly with a nice set of scales and a little modification) or my CJB that I gussied up. Although I'm now seriously considering swapping them out for a SextoBlade. Even cheaper and it still gets the job done wonderfully.
