Storing MWF

I use MWF semi-regularly and have noticed that if I haven't used it for a few days that it will crack. It doesn't seem to be an issue so far as it continues to lather and the scent seems to be the same. I keep my MWF in an oak bowl with a lid. My question is does the ceramic MWF bowl and lid keep the puck hydrated longer or have people with the ceramic bowl experienced the same thing?

I have some soaps (high end ones and low-budget ones also) that will also have tiny cracks on their surface, even if after each use I keep them in the tin they came in and its lid is closed.

Performance-wise, these cracks change nothing for me and I think they are normal, and simply caused by the water / humidity that is left on the soap after its use.

I have my MWF in their ceramic bowl and it is cracked on the edge of the puck.

+1 With MWF the cracking has more to do with the personality of the soap. It's a jealous soap and when it cracks it is telling you to use it more often. It does not like to be neglected. :mad3:

IMHO, the only way to store a puck of MWF is in the ceramic dish. To me it just seems wrong to store it any other way. Has nothing to do with it drying out and cracking.... it's just the way it should be IMO.

I grate all my soaps including MWF in glass Pyrex type bowls. I use The Fat irregularly in rotation but it hasn't cracked.

I can't remember where I read this, but I read that MWF behaves better if it is sealed in a container after use. A small Tupperware container that can be sealed works well. I was able to find a ceramic dish with a flat bottom that has a plastic air tight lid at the dollar store (well, 100 yen store for me). It works great.

The soap is ready to go every time. There aren't any cracks in it even if I haven't used for a couple of days. I make a point of not rinsing out the residual lather after using it. That may have some positive effects on it lasting better.

I use the branded ceramic bowl and the cracks still come if I don't use it. This soap does not like to share a rotation. Luckily, I haven't noticed a drop off in scent or performance because of it.

I (and this is just me) have found that if you completely grate the entire puck of Tabac and Wool Fat and pack them in the Pyrex 2 cup bowls that have a lid, I don't have any problems with cracks what so ever. I never have bought the wool fat cremic bowl, but the Tabac gets slimy under the puck in it's bowl, so I just grate the whole puck and re-pack it. It stops the slime and the cracks.

I have the ceramic dish. For the first puck that I used I let the soap dry out before putting back the lid. Here I sometimes got cracks and the soap did not fill out the container. From the second puck and forward I changed strategy. Directly after I was done shaving I put the lid back on, even sometimes splashed in a small amount of water. So now the puck fills out the container and I have no cracks unless there is 2-3 weeks since I used the soap last time.
