Star lathercatcher, patent date 1896.

I just aquired an old Star Lathercatcher with several patent dates on it. The most recent date is 1896. I have tried to use a standard SE blade in it, but they are a hair too small. Can someone direct me to where I might buy some blades I can use in this beautiful piece of shaving history? Here is a link to a photo of it and an old damaged blade I had that fits it. Note there are no notches out of the sides of the blade.

There should be a tab in the back that pushes the blade forward and locks it in place. Is yours missing the tab?

I was not aware that the blades had changed sizes after the move away from wedge blades. My Yankee lather catcher has a patent date of 1901 and it takes modern blades.

The lack of notches is not significant. The notches showed up when the GEM Micromatics did. Much later.

If you can strop a blade, I have a couple of GEM blades from that era. I could PIF you one if you send me you addy via PM.

Thank you for the info Dcobranchi, from what you have told me about the blades being the same as modern ones I decided to retweak the razor itself, (risky business) but that is what was wrong! The razor was out of whack from being jostled around all these years in someones junk drawer or something. And also thank you for the blade offer too. I have some modern GEM blades that I will use now, so I won't take you up on the PIF at this time, but thanks anyway sir. I'm super pleased I got this razor up and shave ready. I'll use it later. Thanks again sit and God Bless. Have a good day.
