SR Blade Technology...

From what I can tell from this forum, seems like DE blades have come a long way in terms of technology from when they were popular pre-cartridge era.

Was wondering if this is the same case for SRs. For instance has there been a big technological improvement in the blades resulting in better shaves then say 25, 50 years ago?? Is a Dovo today any better than one made back then?

Funny post.

A straight is a retro item and a retro routine. You will find most vintage razors are far better quality and have far better fit and finish than modern ones. Current Dovo's are good performers but compare them to a vintage7/8s Dovo from years back and it's like comparing a chevy to a cadillac.

Of course you can buy customs which are top flight stuff but that's a different story. Some have experimented with differing alloys but in the end you can't beat an old fashioned HCS razor.

Straight razors are like sharks. The same as they've been for all the ages, with no need of evolutionary improvement.:thumbup1:

I don't own any modern blade but I'm sure someone who owns both will comment on this.

I'm very happy with my vintage blades. As someone mentionned in another thread, if the razor survived for 50-100 years, it's good stuff!

The opposite is true. SR's have devolved from the high attention to detail and personal finishes to mass produced "novelties." Thankfully, with the recent upsurge in interest, the makers are trying to renovate their ways and get back to what they were pre WW2.
