What's new

Some low light photos

I'm just re-hashing my hobby photography, and I find that I'm drawn to low-light situations. Examples follow.

EDIT: see below for the better version of #2.

Very nice, Jonathan. I particularly like the textures in the two pictures of the wooden gears, especially the first one. (Is it parts of a clock?)

Nice. :thumbup1: I almost wonder if the second one would look better if the bottle in the foreground was in focus (instead of the boxes behind) but neat effect anyway. I especially like the 'dial' ones. Cool shots. :biggrin1:

Thank you! It's actually a tumbler from an old vault door I took out of a mill office. I had plans to use it in a house (I was in college at the time and actually thought I could do that) but wound up donating it to a local museum, along with a 3-ton safe. I kept the tumbler as a memento.

It would. I wasn't paying attention to thumbnails and uploaded the alternate shot. Here's the better one:

Very cool pictures. What settings do you use? Are you using a light meter?

These were in a batch of my first "revival" shots; that is, using a DSLR for the first time in a very long time. I just fiddled with the settings until I got what I wanted.

Everything was done in aperture priority mode. The ink bottle shots were at 400 speed, f-stop of 8, shutter 1/20, and the exposure brought down just a bit. The papers (my wife's cardmaking stuff) were taken at 200 speed and f-stop of 8, shutter at 1/125. The tumblers were done at 200 speed, f/8, and shutter 1/20.

The outdoor pic, of our town square, was at 200 speed, f/11, shutter 1/60.
