Some advice/tips/corrections? :

Hello, so today (Tuesday) shaving stuff came in, and I just tried my maybe first time ever DE wet shaving a bit ago.

It went pretty well, but I'll probably get better.

However, a couple/few things:

After letting the brush soak/get wet and if I squeeze out some of the water; do I try to let a lot of that water (excess?) go into the lathering cup or dispose of it?

Also, how do I get the shaving cream into the lathering cup, by putting the pre-squeezed brush into the cream in the tub directly then going to lathering cup or?

And also, I have MRGLO and it may not of came with any instructions. Is there a recommended amount of time for it to be on my face before rinsing off?

First off, I am a beginner as well but have come to understand the following:

1. Lathering is not so much a science, rather a 'feel'. Shaving creams or soaps lather differently from one another. Your best bet is to soak the brush like you do already, then squeeze excess water out. (Don't try and choke your brush, a firm squeeze should do).

2. Now you lightly dip your brush into the shaving cream and give the brush a twist to pick up some cream. If you were to use your finger, you should pick up a dime's size worth of cream. (The size of a small coin). That's the amount you want to get into your brush. Now start swirling and whisking that around in the bowl, adding little bits of warm water every 15 seconds while lathering. Stop adding water when you start to get a foamy yet firm and shiny lather.

For a visual instruction I would like to recommend watching some of Mantic59's videos on Youtube. A specific video on lathering can be found here:

Hope this helps you. The most important thing is practice!

Some good advice, Daniel.

Every cream/soap is different. Some require more water and effort than others. Your brush is also unique in how it interacts with what you're trying to lather. Different brushes will lather the same soap or cream differently. You really need to get a feel for the brush and product combo that you're trying to work with. Good luck to you.

I don't have the same brush as you, but I often use the same shaving cream. I usually spoon a bit of it into a bowl rather than dipping my brush in the cream. My logic is that I'm trying to avoid dripping extra water into the cream, which might eventually water it down a bit. I know plenty of other guys just dip their brushes, so I'm not saying my way is the right way - it's just how I've been doing it.

I let my my brush soak while I'm in the shower, then shake the water out without squeezing it. That usually leaves the perfect amount of water left in the brush to lather the cream. However, I live in Chicago and have very hard water. Depending on where you live, and how hard the water is, you might not need as much water as I do. It's always better to start off conservatively and add water as you need it.

Also - don't be afraid to use a bit more cream than you actually need as you're learning to lather. One of my biggest mistakes as a newbie was not using enough product and ending up with thin lather.

Most of all, relax and have fun! There is no rush. My only nasty cuts and weepers have come when I rushed myself.

I shake the water out of my brush into the sink.

I now face lather soaps only, but in the past, I would squeeze directly on the brush and mix in the bowl.

I no longer use a pre shave wash, for me a hot shower is sufficent, but I think you would want to rinse it off right away.

Nice set up you have.

I would dispose of the excess water from the brush. You want to control how much water goes into your lathering bowl. You probably have enough water left in the brush to whip up a good lather. If not, you can add some water by dipping just the tip of your brush into the sink of hot water and continuing to mix.

To keep from getting too much water into my tubs of cream, I hold the tub upside-down and swirl the brush right-side up on it (after I shake out the excess water, of course). Keeps the cream relatively "dry."

All of this talk about cream in a tub, lathering cups, lather squeezing, etc, reminds me of the dark ages of wet shaving. Most of us face lather, so I always advise newbies, including my sons, to face lather. Simple and quicker.
