Some advice please

I shave with straights myself but my nephew who is 6'2 at age 16 has the beard to match and his poor face made me hurt. He' kinda like Baby Huey so I don't think straights are for him but A nice inexpensive DE that I can give him would be nice. Whats a good one for a tender faced boy with a medium thickness of beard hair and growth? I don't want to spend a lot I already gave him one of my brushes and some soap and told him I'd have him a nice razor in a week. Please help me i don't want the boy to suffer with razor burn anymore. Thanks in advance.

Teach him proper prep and technique, with quality products. An old Tech with an Astra might be a good starter combo. The techs can be had for less than $10 on the 'Bay.

+1 on the Tech. It's the real deal yet forgiving if you do not have all your technique down. Some guys never look any further....

I bought a Weishi in chrome, and found I wanted to press because it is so mild. Not a bad razor, but not the best for learning technique. You can do a lot of wrong things and it won't bite you, but will give razor burn. The weight of this razor allows for proper technique.

I have a Merkur 1904 and find it very forgiving, but not like the Weishi. If you do something blatantly wrong it will bite. The heft and balance encourage a light touch.

Either way will need a sample of various blades. Either go around town and buy a pack of the locally available brands (Wilkinson swords from walmart, persona's from sally beauty, generic from the grocery, etc.) or order a sample assortment. Start him with a consistent mild blade that you consider a "go to" blade. As soon as he can shave without cutting himself let him have free reign over the blades he uses (even Feather). He should be cut free after less than a week, and possibly on his first shave. Encourage him to stay with the first blade that he is comfortable with for a few weeks, then try samples coming back to his first comfortable blade between sample blades. Have him take notes on what he likes and doesn't like and why.

Pick up a box of styptic swabs. If he doesn't have he can't use and, according to Murphy, will need. They are single use, about a dozen in the package, and he can pack them in his travel kit. Some people are turned off by traditional styptic pencils (my wife won't let me have on in the house, and some battles are best not fought)

Good luck.

Mr Scruffy has an assortment and we've found some that should fit the bill nicely. I have some Astra's and Feathers from my own DE dip into the world of wetshaving so I should have everything wrapped up. Thank you to all who responded, you have been of help.

Baby Huey says Thanks Mr Scruffy! He just left with his new tools and a shaving lesson. I lathered and shaved with one of the DE razors to show him proper technique and had him shave so I could make sure he grasped it. He came over with razor bumps all over his neck and under his jaw from this am. He only got every other hair too I think. After using the new razors his exact words were " Wow thats smooth!" " Didn't hurt either". So thanks Mr Scruffy I appreciate your help.

A big young guy may appreciate a gentle razor with a long handle.

The Merkur 23C long handled classic is perfect.

I'm glad he enjoyed his first "real" shave. :001_smile

Keep him at it, Scott.

Yes He already shaved yesterday but I couldn't tell. First gentle pass and his under jaw was the cleanest i have seen it since he started growing hair. He was so excited he was actually paying attention.:letterk1:
