Soaps or Creams

Hello B&B,

I am just curious.. Which is better, soaps or creams?

I have always used creams. I shave with an R41. Do soaps offer a closer shave? Do they moisturizer better?

Thanks

Each is better than the other...I love soaps, the satisfaction of taking a hard soap and coaxing a thick and luxurient lather from it. IMHO, the lather from soaps and creams are different, but both are wonderful. I love Mitchell'sWool Fat Soap, but tonight I reveled in the wonderful lather from Irisch Moos cream. Enjoy them all.

I use both extensively. I have a slight preference towards soaps, as I think it gives a thicker lather that lasts better and love the preperation. If I'm in a hurry I'll normally just use a cream since I can be finished shaving in about the same amount of time it takes me to load and lather from a hard soap.

I love creams and how easy they are to lather. They also provide an excellent cushion. However, with enough work, a soap will cushion just as well and lubricate better also. Soft soaps are the best of both worlds for me. Then you get into superlather...

+1 on soft soaps, I can't get triple milled soaps to lather with the same consistency as the soft ones and creams do not have enough cushion for me as a daily straight shaver.

Being a "monkey see, monkey do" type of learner I started with a soap puck because that's what I saw Granddad and Dad use. My experience with creams is limited but successful.

In the end I think it may come to a cultural preference, assuming you don't have a hard water issue or something.

I prefer creams because they are more convenient.

I've never noticed any difference in performance between soaps and creams.

If I do use a soap, I usually SuperLather with the same brand of cream, but that's not always possible.

I prefer soaps. More bang for your buck. 100g puck of Arlington, $15.00, 75g tube of Arlington Cream, $14.00. Soap pucks last much longer as well.

I don't have an issue lathering, if I had difficulty lathering soaps, then creams would be the choice. YMMV

its hard to say, one day i like the hard soaps, the next day creams, mwf hard soap does leave the face nice ans soft after a shave, the creams are a wee bit more easy to use, the best of both worlds is to use both and try the well known brands.

I used to prefer creams, because they involve less work to lather. Then I decided I was going to conquer the soap thing and forced myself to get good at lathering them. Now I use both more or less equally.

Neither is inherently better. Creams are a little easier to lather. Soaps are more traditional. I use both.
