What's new

So the journey begins...

Well, 2 shaves in and I must say, I can see how this becomes rather addictive. My first attempt - I think I made my lather too dry. WTG was actually a little disappointing; lots of areas look like they didn't even get touched(probably bad blade angle). Took my time, hardly any pressure(sometimes needed to add pressure to get any action/again probably bad blade angle), rinsed razor regularly, short strokes, etc...only one nick on my chin. Second pass, XTG, nice and slow, more difficult to find/keep proper blade angle. Played around too much, started going over dry areas and decided to stop(best move I made all day). Overall, I'd call it a success. Second shave today - a little more confident, made lather too wet, WTG & ATG everywhere and then a little ATG on my neck. Called it quits before I got into trouble. Very little irritation, fairly smooth shave. Total time from walking into the bathroom, shower, shave and cleanup = 45 minutes.

Some observations - blade angle is key, don't shoot for perfection yet, & don't shave over dry areas again.

One question though - is it possible to have too much lather on your face? It seems like the blade got clogged pretty quick my first time around so I cut back on my second shave on the amount of lather on my face. Seems like it helped, but not sure. Any thoughts? Thanks.

If the blade is clogging it means your lather is too thick and dry. Also, no matter what you should rinse your blade frequently. Short stroke, flip, short stroke, rinse.

I don't think you can have too much lather, that just means you are doing a good job with your lather work:thumbup:. If I use a pre shave oil and a thick cream, sometimes my razor gets pretty gunked up. When that happens I have to disassemble it to clean it, but I haven't noticed a problem with the shave. It's good to have a lot of lubricity. Less irritation. You are right about stopping before you really want to, smart move. Sometimes less is better. I learned that the hard way. I now enjoy shaving! Good luck.

Even if you'd have done everything perfect with your lather on the first run, you might still have noticed some growth remaining after your first shave. That is normal, and is the result of having to still learn technique and how to get the most out of your equipment. If you were to keep all variables the same over several shaves, you'd see an improvement in your technique which would account for improved smoothness.

Keep practicing (it's not like you don't have the opportunity to do so everyday, just like the rest of us!) and welcome to B&B!

Sure you can have too much lather. Try a little less. Experiment that is part of the fun. Remember to keep your strokes short and to rinse often.

I am a cream user and find that I can get some gunk build up but never enough to affect the quality of my shave. I rinse often and really have no problems. When beginning remember to chant "no pressure" as you shave !!!
Happy Shaves

Addictive! Soon you will be a DE junkie just waiting for your beard to grow so you can have that next fix, I mean next shave! Welcome to B&B!

PINAUD!

Glad to hear that it's going well for you. Your observations are excellent which shows that you are well on the way to some great shaves. Enjoy em!
