What's new

So....I'm officially SRADicted ?

Seeing as I though I'll never be able to collect/equal other collectors here I decided on something a little bit different (I was born that way). I'm all for recycling stuff and finding new, weird and interesting uses for things.

At the risk of creating yet another item for people to collect, it's pretty hard to find this stuff, you gotta be patient and look hard (as I found). So here's what i've collected in a month or so, plus it's so cool (IMO), it glows!

Let me know what you think

Edit: and Oh look 50th post, yay!

Hi
That glowing green glass ware?
It isn't from the victorian era is it?
The victorians used to use uranium in their glass making so they could be amazed in the night with glowing glass!
Even queen Victoria had glowing glass. Still, if it is your brush should be clean!

Very cool. One of the local antique dealers has a large collection of this glass - and wants a fortune for any of it. But, this is the same guy who has a tiny travel razor with a $29 (US) price tag. Haven't been in his store since seeing that.

Wouldn't mind having one of the DE blade hones. Good on ya, Mate!

Wow, that's awesome. I've never seen anything like that, but it sure makes for a sweet setup. Not sure the Mrs. would like green glowing goodness in our bathroom at night though. :001_tongu

Tell me about it, some of the prices of the uranium glass are ridiculous, I was really lucky with most of it. Some people want the fancy decorative stuff which I don't like and is not practical for use anyway.

Best bargain was the Hone for $3.65, same day saw 2 others for ~$60. Got another one yesterday in the box with instruction for not much more.

Still not sure why my generic yellow colgate toothbrush glows so much, weird that!

It's green. And it's green. Saves on electricity. No need for a night light. Very nice and original collection. Keep it glowing. :)

Well theres a problem I don't have to deal with.
The green is only half the light, it's the UV above thats the killer! You know how UV light likes to show up all sorts of things and corners of the bathroom you didn't clean properly. Or you walk in there with a clean shirt you just put on and then look at yourself only to see all the white fluff which was previously invisible. Best part is when other people walk in there and do a triple take trying to figure out what the ...... you've done and if they are actually in the bathroom, it's worth it just for that. :biggrin1:

Where and how much?

Ebay mostly, sometimes it's really expensive, sometimes bargain but you hardly ever see 2 pieces the same so if you want it you got no choice. Plenty of Secondhand/Antique stores have it but it's WAAAYYYY overpriced there. It also comes in pale yellow and pale blue shades but these don't glow nearly as bright. Production of it pretty much ceased after ~1945 as they decided Uranium was put to better use elsewhere, but there is some still being made in Eastern Europe somewhere but it's more of a novelty items.
Some people don't know what they're selling so those are cheaper, but it doesn't always pay off as you can see above on my round blade storage I lucked out, no glowing goodness :-(

Uh, just for the record: uranium glass does not glow by itself. There needs to be an external source of UV light which excites fluorescence in the glass. Turn off the UV, the glow stops. It has nothing to do with the (very small) amount of radioactivity of the uranium.

In the 3rd pic the purple reflections are from the UV light above, guess I should have stated that they don't glow by themselves, overlooked that bit. So no there is no photoluminescence, just UV reactivity. You can also get some glow in photos if you have sunlight hitting the glass although it's not that obvious, just looks greener than it actually is
