What's new

So, I finally went to CVS.

and bought some blades. Are their blades actually different than the ones Walgreens sells? I was under the impression that the CVS blades were carbon steel.

Just dry them off after each use. I just drop the blade in the towel and bolt it dry and it will last you several shaves. I prefer the CVS carbon blades over the SS blades at Walgreens.

Thanks to both of you. Forgot I had wandered in here, or I would have responded sooner. Yeah, I dry the SS ones and leave them in the cabinet. I will leave these on the desk, right next to my brush.

I keep a little square glass container of 90 percent Isopropyl alcohol with my things, after I'm done I swish shake the water off my razors and thend swish them around in the alcohol for a second or two. The isopropyl will displace the water.

First shave with a carbon steel blade. People sing their praises, so I expected them to be a little better. I was wrong- these things are amazing. It was like my two day growth was made of butter. No more stainless steel for me.

I have a spray bottle I will put some in- thanks

Welcome to the carbon lovers club! I used a Gem Blue Star in a Clog pruf this morning with the usual outstanding results I've come to expect.

I couldn't believe how smooth it was- it was even quieter (though I never minded the sound).

Since finding carbon blades I havent looked back. They cut smoother with less irritation and pull, the stainless blades kill my neck...ugh.

Treet are my favorites so far.

Tried a Micromatic Clog Pruf today for my first SE shave. Used a vintage but gleaming Gem blade. I have to admit I was kind of nervous about the different angle. A 3-pass shave left a bit of roughness that I made perfect with a Canadian pre-war Tech head / New handle and a Derby blade.

I kept it kind of conservative, trying to understand the angle and experience the different feeling. Definitely felt more like a straight razor - just without the nicks.

Looking forward to adding it once or twice a week.

Derek

Gem Blue Stars are marvellous blades. I've switched to a Damaskeene/Blue Star combo at home and a Gem 1912/Blue Star for travelling, after buying a mass of vintage unused blades recently. I'll try the CVS carbons as backup/emergency stock and maybe try a package of Treets as well if I can find them easily. I doubt I'll ever willingly go back to DE shaving again.

All of this talk about SE's and carbon steel blades lead to:

Couldn't agree more! Carbons rule in the SE world. I was very sad when my local Rite Aid stopped carrying the Treet carbons. Recently did a shave with a stainless Gem and had a neck full of weepers. Never happens with the carbon blade, and I find them just as sharp or sharper and wayyyy smooth!

Have you tried the rite aid brand? They might be just the same.
