What's new

Slim pricing question from a newbie

Okay, I'm still relatively new at this, just started about a week ago, but I'd like to have an adjustable for the future. I decided to stop by a local antique store today and found what looks to be a black-handled slim (forgot to check under the head to make sure it was Gillette, d'oh!). It seemed to be in pretty good condition, just looked like some discoloration/soap scum on it, the price was $12. That seemed fair, but I need to wait until after payday anyway, and figured I'd double check here. Also, any other tips for checking out the razor for damage. I'll check the mechanism next time I go in, didn't want to go that far till I was ready to buy, as it was behind a glass counter. Thanks for the help!

I paid $12 plus tax for the one I got for my Dad for Fathers day(that he refuses to use because it looks so nice ::grumble::) a few years back. Depending on condition, good price.

Welcome to B&B.

Any TTO razor should look symmetrical as you hold it straight up and turn the knob.
Doors should start to raise evenly and open at the same time (closer the better)

On an adjustable turn the dial to 1 and with the doors open you should be able to manually move the flat plate up and down on the under side of the head. Next you should be able with the doors still open adjust the dial from one to nine and back again.

Of course the razor could still be fine but gunked up enough that none of the above will happen.

Good hunting.

Good find. I was very proud when I rescued my first vintage razor from an antique store. I was all the more proud when I cleaned it up and and then put it into action. I hope that you enjoy your shaves.

I was going to give the exact advice Tom did. It could be a great find, but check out the mechanics because the adjustables seem to have alignment issues on a more regular basis than other styles. Best of luck! And welcome to the boards!!
