Slightly Disappointed with Merkur Blades

Working through a big sampler pack and was disappointed with the amount of pulling with the Merkur blades relative to most others. My beard is really not that heavy. I lived in Germany for about a decade and usually find like "Vince" says on the Sham Wow commercial, "The Germans always make good stuff." Some of the reviews I've read concur with my findings. I love their razors, but I think I will load them with Derbys for the most part.

Yah, when I received my Merkur, I immediately tossed the blade it came with and loaded it with Derby's as well. I just did it instinctively, considering I was a newbie. I later found out though that those Merkur blades don't get a lot of love due to the poor shave the provide. Im sure there are some Merkur lovers around here though, I do love those Derby's though!

If you are only slightly disappointed with Merkur blades then that is a better experience with them than I had.

On a whole, just about everyone is slightly disappointed with Merkur blades.

I found them to be of mediocre quality, and they are very expensive. There are much better quality blades, for quite a bit less money.

That's good advice. I'll send them directly to the blade safe in the future. One would think that the German engineers would go back to the drawing board, but they probably figure why bother as the lemmings rush to buy expensive cartridges today.

When I had my razor, I got a ten pack of merkur razors along with it. Since I didn't know any better, I stuck with merkur blades for quite some time. When It came time to order some more blades, I noticed that derby blades were fairly cheap, so I decided to get a pack of those as well. I didn't touch them for a week or so, but when I did, I was AMAZED! :w00t: It the best shave I had ever experienced!

I immediatly threw out my remaining merkur blades and ordered a lot more derbys.

As a noob I went with the Merkur HD and Merkur blade combo. I tried the Derbys at first but I developed irritation that I've only experienced with Derby blades. So I stood by Merkurs for a while. I soon realized that they were not incredibly sharp but there was a benefit. As a noob I had a good feel for where the contact point was and was able to get my angle right which helped with my technique. I later moved on to other blades but agree with the sentiment that they are not the best blades available. In fact, I view Merkurs as training wheel blades - something to get started with but you move on as soon as you're ready.

I never had a problem with Merkur blades, but I have found better. Right now my choice is Derby. Merkur blades do have their fans, though, so they are pleasing a lot of guys out their.

I bought a five-pack of Merkurs along with my first DE razor. The first two blades were amazingly good, the third and fourth were OK, and the last was horrible. I haven't bought any since.

We can add you to the group who "love the razor, but think the blades suck"

I have to say that I am a newb as well. Been DE shaving for a little over two months. I have tried Derby, Red Personas, Merkur, and Feather blades. I have to say that the Merkur razor with the derby is the best combination for me. However, I did try an old Gillette SS with a Derby and I wasn't very impressed.

I used merkurs when I started. For a beginner, Merkurs helped show me proper angle and technique. Wrong on either and you started to feel like tug. You never got a great, close shave but you got to learn the proper way of shaving.

When I upgrated to Astras, I made the transition quick, because of my practice with the Merkur.

I read that Merjur blades were so-so, so I didn't try one until I used some of the higher regarded blades. My Merkur razor came with a Merkur blade and I got another in a sampler pack. I finally tried one. It pulled on the first shave. Both sides of the blade, it didn't matter. I got a (as in one) shave out of it, and had no desire to use it again. I tried the other Merkur blade I had. Same thing. I never considered my beard to be that tough: certainly the hair on my head isn't thick or stiff. But when shaving, I'm finding out that I need a blade on the sharper end of the spectrum, and the Merkur definitely isn't it.

My first shave was with a Merkur. After all the hype I thought to myself "this isn't very enjoyable..." I had some bad razor burn. Things are starting to settle into place for me now, though.
