Simpson Duke vs. Chubby

I have been planning on buying a Simpson Duke 2 Best, but the Chubby appeals to me too. Does the difference in the brushes justify the considerable difference in the price? Who has tried them both in 2 Best? Somebody give me a rationale for spending more . . . or less. Thanks, Jack

I have a CH 1 in two-band Super and a Duke 2 in Best. They are very close in size. I prefer my CH 1, primarily because I really like Simpson's two-band Super hair. To me, the CH 1 in two-band Super is worth the premium price.

As Dave says.... it is much fairer to make a comparison between the Duke2 and a Chubby1 because they are similar sizes. I have a Duke2 in Best and recently acquired a Chubby2 in Super 2-Band- both great brushes but very different.

Really interested in this as well, though I've been eyeing the Duke 3 to compare to my chubby 2. SBAD.... incurable :001_rolle.

The CH1 Best is quite a lot larger and denser than the Duke 2, a Duke 3 would be a better comparison.

Personally, I have no love for the Duke 2 go for CH1 in Super 2B if funds allow.

I have both the CH1 Best and the Duke 3 in Best and to me they are the same brush with different handles with the nod going to the Duke 3 because of the larger handle.

Someone must have Duke 2 in Best and Chub 1 in Best who can give us a more apples to apples comparison.

I have them. The knot on the Chubby is much larger. Or at least it feels it. The Chubby is more fan shaped on the bulb-fan continuam and I enjoy this much more. The DUKE2 is still a very nice brush, but the knot on mine isn't shaped as well as it might be; generally its sort of uneven and specifically it just isnt fan shaped enough. THe Chubby is also denser. It has the best face feel of any brush I've used; muscular and soft-tipped, but small enough to not have any problems releasing lather. THe handle on the DUKE2 is a couple of mm taller; I prefer to the CH handle, which is simply too small. If Simpson could make a brush with a CH1 knot, a CH2 handle, and guarantee the knot would be more towards the fan shape, they would have the best brush on the market imo.

ps I suspect the comments regarding the DUKE2 and CH1 being of a similar size are due to the bulbousness of the two-band knots Simpson is currently making; in the same hair grade there is a pretty clear difference.

Wow! What great pictures on that link, and what a great place this is to ask questions. I know a lot more than I did, but I still don't know what I want. That seems to be the way of it with this addicting gear.

I no longer have either of these Chubbies - I am now a Stubby man :001_smile - but on the left is a Vulfix-made 2-band Chubby, and on the right is an original Simpson. The older models definitely had more of a fan shape.

The one on the right is Vulfix as well. I know, I used to own it :wink2: - that and there is no "Simpson" lampblack where the sticker used to be. That brush was soooooo awesome. We are both fools for selling it. A fan shaped Vulfix Simpson in Super, *sigh*

The SimpFix brushes in best seem to be more fan shaped, or at least my Duke 2 is purchased almost a year ago. My "Ehsan" was way too bulbous for me.

I totally agree. Brett at Vulfix personally confirmed me that the Chubby 1 Best and the Duke 3 Best are exactly the same brush, with different handles. Since the Duke 3 has a larger and more comfortable handle, I would certainly get the Duke.

Yeh, the one on the right is a Vulfix as well. But its not a two-band brush. The two band brushes are much more bulbous. Which sort of answers this question (my CH1 is in best):

Left is Vulfix made Ch2 2-band Super, center is Somerset Duke 3 best, right is Somerset Ch1 2-band super.
As you can see, Somerset 2-bands were bulbous also.
