I'm looking for new shoes. I used to wear brown, then switched to black. Now I sort of want to go back to brown, but burgundy seems versatile. Can I wear them with light kahkis? I don't wear cotton kahkis a la The GAP, more like kakhi dress slacks. Any recommendations for burgundy shoes? I prefer slip-ons, and want to buy one more pair of cheap shoes before getting something more expensive like AE's. I would have done paragraphs but my enter key isn't working here...

Absolutely. Good brands are Rockport and Florsheim. You can sometimes find NIB shoes on the bay at very good prices.
Personally, I dislike having too much contrast between the "lightness/darkness" of my pants and shoes, as demonstrated above. A lighter shoe would compliment a lighter pant better than a darker shoe.

I feel the same way. I generally prefer a lighter shoe with khakis also. But I don't think the dark shoe contrast is that horrible either just not my cup tea.
I wouldn't go with that much contrast, but that is a subjective, personal decision.
I'm a big believer in oxblood loafers/belts with khaki trousers, but that's because my general mode of dress could best be described as trad. It's definitely a timeless, rather preppy look. As always, YMMV. That said, I'd recommend taking a look at the Cole Haan Pinch loafer if you're looking to make the leap. Classic lines, solid build quality, excellent comfort, a variety of available widths, and a price point that sits around $100. Good luck with your hunt!
The burgundy / chili / merlot colored shoes are super versatile and perfect for khakis. As noted above, you can score some good deals on eBay for new or gently worn shoes - but for slightly above what you are going to spend on a pair of throw-away shoes, try a pair of Allen Edmonds from their outlet "The Shoe BanK"

well, this brings up the opinions on when to wear burgundy shoes????....personally i like to wear these with khaki pants, light to med. blue shirt, maybe a white shirt on occasion....
Olive, mid-to-darker grey, any blue dark enough to wear with a straight face ...
