My shavemac Moss brush fell of my sink and shattered into about 20 pieces. Now i shave with just the badger hair lol. I emailed Bernd and he said it would cost $59 to get a new handle.

Should i buy the new handle or just pay a few bit more and get an entirely new brush.

FULL DISCLOSURE: My silvertip Moss brush is about 2 years old and has lost about 30 hairs since i got it and isn't as dense as it use to be. Since i paid so damn much for it, i just chose to keep it besides the lower than expected quality.

If the knot's not as dense as you think it should be I would go for a new brush. Tell Bernd about your old knot. He might warranty it and not charge you for it. That way you pay for the new handle but get a brand new brush.

Losing 30 hairs is nothing. That knot would have at least 16,000 hairs in it. If it doesn't seem as dense now as when it was new, it probably just needs a shampoo/cleaning.

More important is whether you were happy with it before you dropped it. If you weren't all that thrilled, then get a new brush. If you really liked it, then get it repaired. $59. is more than reasonable for a Shavemac silvertip. You could even get a custom handle made for around the same price and have your knot put in it.

find a vintage handle and stick the knot in it

This idea I think is great. No sense is wasting a great knot. You could buy a new brush and come across a old handle and end up with 2 really nice brushes. Maybe even see what one of the crafters here can spin up for you.

One thing that may save you some $ is getting the knot installed into a non-shavemac handle. There are members of the forum that make custom brush handles that could come up with something for your shavemac knot in a wide variety of materials. I don't know how much it would cost, but you would save $ by not having to ship the knot to Germany. I would contact Penworks, Rudy Vey, and Cooncatbob and see what they say about a new handle for your shavemac if this is something you're open to.

And I also think 30 hairs is nothing. After you get it repaired, definitely clean it with shampoo and a mild water + borax or water + vinegar solution.

The economic argument for repairing the brush makes sense to me. The Moss brushes now cost about $190, so $56 for the new handle seems pretty reasonable!

My opinion is to simply replace the handle, it costs less.
Also, having just two years, your brush is pretty new.

Custom handle will allow you to set this one deeper....that will increase density for you too.

A custom handle...the only way to go. Forget sending it back to Germany.....the means to make it better than the original is before you.
