What's new

shorter & stiffer than Rooney 3/1 ?? (as it were)

Greetings all --
Any recommendations on a badger brush that's shorter & stiffer than a Rooney 3/1? Less than $100 would be nice, but I'd go to $150 for the right brush.
Thanks much,
- Richard

Same size handle or a shorter handle? Most of the brushes with shorter, stiffer knots in your price range have stubbier handles.
e.g. Simpson Chubby, Simpson Classic, Simpson Duke 3, Rooney 1/1.
If you want the same size handle you can get a custom Shavemac with D01 or 2 band hair in a shorter loft, but that might be over your budget.

I have no experience with rooneys but I have considered buying them before and the two that get rec's all the time are 3/1 and 1/1 and the only difference I've heard other than handle shape is that the 1/1 is shorter and stiffer...

so yeah.

The 3/1 is already a pretty scrubby brush, but the 1/1 would be a bit more.
A Rooney Finest would fit the bill, but they're really tough to find.

How about a custom Shavemac, but with their Finest grade of hair instead. A 22 mm knot goes for about $80 before shipping. You can specify the loft and if you choose the 167 handle, it looks similar to the Rooney 3's.

I don't think even a very short lofted Shavemac in Finest would be stiffer than a Rooney 3/1... Maybe a short lofted D01 or Two-band D01, though

No? I've heard their Finest combine hairs to give pretty good backbone, plus by being custom built, it tends to be pretty well stuffed. No doubt nothing is going to be stiffer than the D01, but I was thinking about the price point too.

I wonder if Expat has a tall lofted 3/1.

If I remember correctly, 1/1's loft is 4mm shorter than 3/1's and it's percievably stiffer (not to mention, more "precise" in applying lather) than the larger 3/1. Even in Finest, 3/1 is almost too floppy for me and I prefer the control that the smaller 1/1 (especially if it's a Heritage 1/1) gives me while face-lathering. In fact, I've settled on a Heritage 1/1 in Super, for me it's an ideal combination of qualities - density of the loft, backbone, tips that are not too scritchy and ability to face-lather without getting my nostrils and ears clogged with soap. Heritage 1/1 in Finest is even stiffer than 1/1 in Super but man, is it ever scritchy. Better flowthrough though, the Super is a bit of a lather hog due to a denser knot.

Hey, what about a Simpson Colonel. Bullgoose has them at a good price, Simpsons' Best grade is excellent and the loft may be around what you are looking for.

Actually the difference is closer to 8mm total:

1/1:
Overall brush height: 86mm
Handle height: 42mm
Brush Loft: 44mm

3/1:
Overall brush height: 98mm
Handle height: 50mm
Brush Loft: 48mm

I recently upgrade from an Edwin Jagger Medium Best to the Rooney 1/1.
So far honestly I'm not impressed.
It is much stiffer, though far denser as well.
I think it is more because I prefer to bowl lather, and face lathering is a whole different monster to me.
I'm considering posting to the BST for a swap to the 3/1, but I want to give the new style more time to adjust to it.

Quite precisely, the poster you quoted was correct in stating that the loft was 4mm different. Overall heigh is a less helpful distinction as it pertains to the stiffness of the brush, as that accounts for a difference in handle height as well. The meaningful distinction here is that the 1/1 is 4mm shorter. As a result, it's also scrubbier (though my 1/1 was a T&H - yeah I bit the bullet a while back).

In any case, I would recommend it as a scrubbier alternative to the 3/1, but prefer my Colonel in Best. I was able to secure one with a fan-shaped knot and it's a great little face-lathering badger.

I've decided the Rooney 1/1 is not for me.
Too stiff and/or too small for my bowl lathering.
I'm in the midst of a trade to a 3/1 from another user, but I can't seem to PM him at the moment.
I'm guessing he's hit his top limit in the mailbox.
