What's new

shoe question

So normally I am either dressed for the office (slacks, dress shirt, nice shoes) or not (engineer boots, cuffed jeans, shirt) and I don't have much in between. I am pretty well versed in fashion, for a guy, and I am perplexed. I am going out this weekend with my wife and some friends, will likely be wearing nicer jeans with no cuff, and I need nice shoes that fit that bill. I want something that will dress up my jeans a bit, without looking like I am trying to wear dress shoes with it. I also don't want to spend $300 on them. I do understand the benefit of paying for good shoes, but I just don't feel like getting into that kind of bill right now.

So, any recommendations? Pics are helpful, but I can always do a google search if needed. Thanks in advance!

I will have to look at some of them again. In fact, I had a pair of Clarks chukka's a long time ago and never liked them. I will look at some new versions though.

I never could get into chukkas. Tried them on a few times, but never could get used to the look.

If you are wearing nice dark jeans, then a pair of black loafers would do.

You should be able to find a nice semi causal pair for well under $100.

Long-sleeve button up shirt, dark jeans and black loafers ought to keep you looking better than most for your weekend outing.

I have a pair of 'casual' wingtips if there is such a thing, the leather is scuffed up a bit so they aren't the wall street banker look. I thought about wearing those, but was concerned they might be too formal. The Bass nubuck isn't a bad idea actually. How do you maintain them, and do they work with jeans and a nice shirt?

What kind of dress shoes do you have? Once and a while I will wear my dress shoes which I normally wear with suits with a more "casual" (usually pants and button down shirt - i.e. business casual). At the very least it would be a way to see how your outfit looks without shelling out the cash for more shoes.

Doc Marten Zack's are great casual shoes and will last 10+ years. They have black, bark, and tan. Most comfortable shoes I have ever owned, I wear these more than my Nike's. I have black for work and bark for not work.

I ended up getting these, now just waiting for them to come in. Thanks for the recommendations, I will let you know how these work out.

Steve's got it. I don't know anything about the brand, and its a bit more than I wanted to spend, but the reviewers all raved about the fit.

There are these semi-casual/smart shoes out there that have a rubber sole, but still look pretty classy.

Like these Swear London brogues: http://www.swear-london.com/shopping/men/designer-swear-logan-brogue-shoe-item-10250006.aspx

Others have similar kind of shoes - usually with a similar model boots - available. You'll find plenty of good deals online (for example, my Swear Logans cost me around $70 - although, not the model above - full leather/black sole).

I have a pair of Allen Edmonds Dundee, chukka boots in burgundy shell cordovan. They can be extremely dressy, or casual depending upon what I pair them with. Another pair of Allen Edmonds, Malvern is a pebble grain calf, with a rubber sole is decidedly more casual, but do for dress in a pinch.
