Shipping prices on ebay are absurd

Spare a thought for 'us poor aussies' who, when we pay for an item in the States, sometimes pay more for postage than the actual product!!!

But having said that of my several purchases from the US nothing has arrived broken..

shrug.

I always ignore what the shipping is and just build it into the price, like a starting price.

I've had single razor or brush postage quotes from $3US to $81US from the US !!!!!! :scared:

I once took an eBay lister to task over shipping for an uncased Micromatic that he had for sale. I asked him how much the razor weighed and he told me 8 oz.

I took my business elsewhere.

8 oz. is quite a heavy razor. I just shipped a Merkur 23c wrapped in bubble wrap in a bubble mailer and it weighed 2.8 oz.

The biggest issue is they put a shipping charge of $7.00 and then ship it in a padded envelope which is usually around $1.29 at the post office and $1.80 for postage for a total of $3.09.

I think some eBayers sell an item cheaply then re-coop their profit on the postage and I believe there are no eBay fees associated with the postage, excess postage goes straight in the sellers pocket. EG, I bought a straight from someone in Minnesota, asked them to wrap it opened in bubble wrap then put it in a mailer tube and fill the void with bubble wrap as well, the razor was US$12.00, the postage was $5.64 USPS First Class International, the cost was reasonable for both the razor and the postage IMHO. Saw another identical razor in comparable nick starting bid US$9.99, "Buy it now" of US$12.99, asked the seller for a postage estimate packed the same as the first one also USPS First Class International from Minnesota, his reply was US$33.60 firm. Beats me?

This. I recently sold some stuff on ebay and put the shipping charges way overpriced to save on some ebay fees.

Then I had some people start disputes and wanted refunds because they were overcharged on shipping. Bottom line is if I had put the shipping charges more fair, the price of the item would have adjusted for it.

It all comes down to the bottom line. I don't care if I buy a razor for $1 and pay $19 for shipping, or if the razor is $17 and shipping is $3. As long as the shipping charges are clearly spelled out up front, what's the difference? If a seller ekes a bit more out this way, then more power to them. eBay isn't hurting by any means and since their acquisition of Paypal, they get you coming and going.

A mate of mine fell for this, his fault though for not checking on delivery charges, he bid and won a guitar for £25.00 and only then noticed shipping was £35.00, and this was shipped in the uk to a uk address and usually costs £15.00:cursing:

It's a well known scam. Always check the postage before you bid on e bay.
The other one that is really annoying is when the guy won't combine postage if you buy more than one item. If they don't say it, they don't have to do it.

You know why? It's because it cost time and therefore money to pack the goods, write the address, take the item to the post and stand in line to stamp and ship it. If you don't like the guys shipping charges, see if you can buy the item for less elsewere. Simple.

I've bought a few razors off the BST forum (thanks guys) and have always felt a bit ashamed about the cheap prices quoted to me for shipping (even offering to pay more than asked for) when people on *bay can (and do) charge a fortune for shipping similar items, it takes the same long time to arrive over here if I've paid 5 dollars shipping or 50 dollars. I now look at the shipping price on *bay even before I look at the BIN price, if its too expensive I move on and and look for a similar/same item from a different seller with a cheaper shipping cost.

Yup, the last three things I bought recently, 2 were free (different sellers), and the other was like 2 bucks for shipping. The bay has a wide range of shipping charges, from free to reasonable to insane. Play smart and take the charges into account for what you want to pay.

It has been apparent to me for years that shipping charges are being used as part of the actual price for the item. I just consider that whenever I bid on an item.

The shipping price is for Postage and handling.

As "handling" means whatever the seller wants it to mean, I just take the shipping price into account as part of the purchase price.
