Shelf life of a DE blade?

Lately I have been shaving with some that are about 40 years old and they have been excellent. Properly stored, they would probably last a long time.

+1. It's metal. If properly stored (e.g. away from moisture) etc... the shelf-life should be longer than you.

I still have quite a few Wilkinson Sword England, Schick Plus Platinum from the early 1970's and they still shave great....like the day they were manufactured. If you have a lot of blades, then I suggest that you don't store them in the bath room or anywhere where humidity or water vapor can get at them. That also goes for under the sink or in the Medicine Cabinet. I keep them in a sealed plastic bag, in a large plastic storage box, away from excessive humidity, heat or sunlight.

Cheers.:biggrin1:

I see. There would not be a considerable reduction in sharpness then. Thanks.

I mean, from a molecular level a metal is basically a crystalline structure of metal atoms. Unless exposed to something (water, air, etc) or abraded (rubbed) I can't see any way the edge would "go stale" or anything. With the wrappers and minimal exposure to water and air I would say the blade should stay sharp for a REALLY long time.

Is longevity only with STAINLESS blades? There have been many fearful posts about plain carbon steel ones:001_huh:
Carbon blade are far more prone to oxidation and will degrade readily unless steps are taken to prevent such. However, stainless steel blade are not immune to the ravages of oxidation but fair better given modest steps to protect them.
