Sheffield shaving cream

Just found some for a buck a tube. Have never used a cream before. Any advice? Did I waste my buck? Thanks

I had to use Google to find one reference to it on this board. Did not sound like very useful stuff - it was compared to Brylcreem! But for $7 at some online barbering places, I'll be danged if I don't find a use for it somewhere.

Discount Drug of Ohio is a really neat place (only place I've ever seen it...and Pinaud Bay Rum and LV, too [I had to smell it again...still smelled like a burning catbox]).

Just noticed on the box it contains an ingredient called spermwax.

SPERMWAX.

That just makes my day. Don't even wanna know what it is.

Is this a vintage cream or they currently produce it? Is there a date on the tube/box?

Is it real spermwax or synthetic?

I just made that up. Maybe it's from a sperm whale, but I don't think those are hunted anymore. Maybe I am wrong too.

People used for a lot of sperm whale stuff way back when, including making candles. Maybe it's an old formula from sea faring days.

I have a tube of the Sheffield Brushless. Like the OP I paid a buck for it. It does exactly what you would expect a brushless cream to do; lubricates and provides a nice glide for your razor blade. Works fine.

Probably synthetic, now. It's also called Spermaceti. There's a good article on it at Wikipedia.

B&B is so educational! :w00t:

Tried it tonight, using my usual prep. All I can say is, I prefer mug and brush.

However, this morning I tried it on my hair and it worked much better than either the Jeris or the Vitalis knockoff I'd been using. Not greasy or shiny like Brylcreem, no residue later in the day, and kept it all in place. So at a buck a tube and a little dab doin' ya for the day, I'm stocking up.
