Shaving With Your "Ears"

The more I shave, the more I realize just how much I have learned to shave by sound. When DE shaving, there is such a distinctive sound as the blade cuts your hairs. I found this not to be true with cartridges. By learning to listen it has taught me about proper blade angle, pressure, and the direction of my beard. I think it is one of the most valuable tools in getting a great shave. Anyone else find this?

Had noticed it my self but not paid a lot of attention at 1st.
Then someone else posted about it here and told myself I should start listening better. But have still been using my eyes to watch the angle.

It caught my ear again last night. So I started listening more.
So thanks for the post I will listen more closely and see if can help me tweak my skills. As a noob... less the 2 months I need all the help i can get.

I used to have the sink running when I shaved, but beyond the wastefulness of that action, I have found that listening to my shave does allow for a refinement of things like stroke, speed, etc. Listening while shaving is just as important and looking and feeling.

Totally agree. I was having some problems finding the right angles for south of the jawline until i started just trying to match the sound of a good stroke along my cheek.

Plus it's so damn fulfilling, like the sound of one hand clapping.

My merkur will ring when I'm shaving a certain direction I think that sounds cool. And yes I listen to the cutting action I think I get a better "feel" for what I'm doing.

I was noticing this morning how loudly my HD thundered with my thick cottony L'Occitane lather.

That stuff is amazing. I'm past a cartridge shave with the very first pass of that combo.

And SMBO's eyes bugged out when she felt it, then she loved the smell too.

Anybody with soap/cream AD should check out L'Occitane. It cured me and might cure you too.

You'll even be able to hear the difference.

I've found that certain razors are louder than others. The loudest one I have is a 1968 Gillette Knack. Listening to the sound of the razor is a relative thing; the sound is not the same from razor to razor. YMMV.

True the "tuning" of the razor will be different from razor to razor because the weight difference. My Mekur sounds different from my Superspeed and my Blue Tip (bigger difference). This is because the weight (relative pressure) on the skin. Also figure in the aggressiveness of the razor. The less aggressive razor will sound softer and the more aggressive razors will sound louder.

Just a theory....?

All you gents with adjustable razors and open combs, time to test it out.

Straights: now that is something even more interesting.....
