Shaving with Grandpa

This weekend I made a trip home (from Atlanta to the hills of West Virginia) to visit my mom and grandfather. Over the past few months, I had built up a nice "starter" kit to get my grandfather back into DE shaving since he long ago converted to cartridges coupled with his favorite Gillette Cream in a can.

In the kit: A Gillette Fatboy replated by our very own Krona Kruiser, a fat handled Gillette Tech, Astra SP blades, Red Personna Blades, Gillette 7 O'clock yellow blades, a tube of C.O. Bigelow, a La Toja stick, an alum block, Pinaud Clubman, and a B&B Essential Brush (yellow). Friday night, when I got home, I introduced him to his equipment and gave him a demo with some of the gear I brought to use.

He was intrigued and told me stories of shaving with his dad (who used a straight on the back porch back in the 30's). While he loved the idea of the C.O. Bigelow, he was drawn to the scent and feel of the La Toja stick and Saturday morning we got up earlier than normal to shave together. He lathered up with the stick and brush like an old pro and proceeded to whisk the Fatboy around his face like he'd been shaving that way all along. It was really neat to see how he held the razor and shaved the different parts of his face (much different than how I do it). He was quick and never so much as nicked or irritated his face. He applied the alum and Clubman and admired his handiwork in the mirror. It was a great shave for someone who hadn't used a DE in over 30 years, and I think the idea has stuck since my mom told me he's used the stick and brush every morning so far.

My grandfather and I have always been close, and it's nice to have something to bring us even closer. Nothing beats sharing something you love WITH someone you love. It was a great weekend, and I can't wait to go back.

Wow. That is a heart-warming story. Nice kit you put together for him and its also nice to know that shaving is like riding a bike.

Thanks for sharing that.

My Granddad was more like my dad than my own dad, who skedaddled when I was six.

He was an old time Oklahoma cowboy, and we rode a lot ofmiles and worked a lot of cattle together.

I'd give a lot to saddle up with him on one more frosty morning and watch the sun come up between a horse's ears alongside him.

LOVE this story! Outstanding! I sent my 91 year-old Dad a set up for Father's Day and got him back into DE shaving.

Now half as wise
So did he talk about what razor, soap, etc he used back in the day?

What a great story and experience!:thumbup1:

That is a great story and I would love to hear more of them from other members. It's times like those that make great memories.

Well done! I know your grandfather appreciates it.

What a great story and experience!:thumbup1:

When he saw the Fatboy, he said "I think I used to have one of these at one point." At 87, I'm sure he's used or tried most of the various razors that are out there. He said he used to use a Williams shave stick (which I think is why he gravitated to the La Toja stick). As for a brush, he said there was a Fuller salesman in the neighborhood that would come by once a week selling new products and that he remembered having a brush from them. My mom had her Grandfather's brush (also a Fuller Badger) which I recently restored with a knot from TGN.

I would have loved sharing this experience with my grandfather who passed. My dad always tells me how he used to use DE razors. Congratulations my friend. Fantastic story!

Thanks for sharing your story. It's awesome to be able to spend quality time with your grandfather like that. Wish I could've done that with my gramps.

Fabulous story.
The closest I have come to converting a family member is my uncle to whom I donated a Gillette Tech, some feathers, a pre-shave oil and a couple of creams. He used them every day when I was staying at his place and he was enjoying using them.
Today I put an Edwin Jagger brush, a sampler pack of blades and some Proraso cream in the post for him.
