Shaving the jawbone area/jaw

Hey B&B, I have a question about shaving the jaw and along the jawbone. I do have a defined jawbone, but it hurts to shave. I do the 3 pass shave as usual, WTG, XTG, ATG. However, during the first to passes, not a lot of hair comes off my jawbone. It's not until the last where a majority come off, but it hurts!!! I use no pressure and use very short strokes. But afterwards, there is still prickly hair there. I have to put pressure to get a BBS there, but by doing that, it gets irritated and some razor burn. Any idea how to shave the jawbone area? My chin is also in the same state...Any help would be greatly appreciated by my face.

I have the EXACT same issue but it is not on my jawline it is only on my lower neck and just the one side. Im currious to any solutions because I have read ecerything that says never to apply pressure but like you said you have to apply pressure as I do to to get a decent cut.

I have the same issue in the same places. I gave myself time to grow a little extra stubble and realized through beard mapping that the whiskers move in a bunch of different directions in those areas. I really took my time to find the grain for the WTG pass this morning and finally got a close, non-irritating shave in those areas today. Like everything else on here, YMMV. Good luck!

That is a tough area to get.
If I get irriation anywhere, that's going to be the spot.
I only go WTG for my passes and tread lightly on that area.
I can honestly say that it doesn't get as close as the other areas, but I'm OK with that.

If anyone has a great suggestion I'd also like to hear it.

Sir, we have the EXACT same problem, I used a feather in an aggressive razor today and got razor burn without the bbs. And I used arko, I have no idea what to do.

Then there is no hope....

Joking aside, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with the issue. I will try to maybe go diagnal against the grain, not directly against it. Anyone have issue with under the jawbone? I always have a small line of hair that I can never get...Pull the skin up maybe? I don't know.

I have the exact same problem, and until recently, just accepted that it was never going to be a totally smooth shave. I have found a way to get a BBS shave on my jawline by doing a few things. First, I have a goatee so I don't shave my chin. Due to this, I'll pull the bottom right corner of my chin (where the goatee hair line is) to stretch the right side of my cheek, then use short strokes downwards, or against the grain. I really concentrate on getting the perfect angle during this, instead of using pressure. It works every time for me! Hope it works well for you all too. Let me know!

Bingo. The key for under the jaw is to pull that skin up and over your jaw line. For me, I then shave it carefully ear to chin, which is ATG for me. For you a different direction might be better, depending on your how your hair grows. If you don't have very loose skin, this may not work for you :). Also, alum helps here, as you skin will probably be wet, and rubbing some on your skin stretching hand make it easy to get a good grip on it, and pull it up tight.

On my prior passes, over go that area WTG at least once, and XTG as well. That makes the ATG pass much easier.

Then there is no hope....

Same here. I can actually go ATG on the jaw line but not much further down my neck.
I also don't do much direct ATG on my mustache and below my lower lip.
Can I? Yes but the reward of BBS for a couple hours doesn't outweigh the risk of possible raw skin.
I use a very light touch with an R41 as my daily driver. One WTG and two XTG for a consistent DFS.

Another option, and the one that I use, is to open my mouth wide, allowing the skin over the jawline to ride up into the cheek area a bit. I never can grip anything well enough to pull it.

try going at a slant (\) from bottom of neck to jaw and start from ear and work towards your chin and just look to the side, this seems to work for me

A tip I picked up on this forum is to open the mouth slightly, turn your head and drop your chin down towards your collar bone. If you do this properly, it will flatten out the jawline (almost as flat as your cheek) and make it much easier to shave that area. It really works great for me. I have a round face and it makes it much easier to shave under my jaw and chin. Give it a try!

i have been at it for almost two years and i have never been able to get a BBS shave especially the jawline, but i get a DFS and i am happy with it.
Try stretching the skin and buffing. Good luck.

I think there's two different discussions going on here.
One discussion is getting a blade through the thick wirey ATG hair growth that it seems a lot of people have on the jaw line.
The other discussion appears to be getting the the part of the skin or beard to be flat enough to get a substantial part of the blade through the beard which lies on the sharpest curvature of the jaw line

After my 3 passes, I rub my thumb, index, and middle fingers in alum...lightly. This allows me to pull the skin for it to be stretched when I pull near the chin, for the last jawline pass. Alum really helps with grip!

I have a very defined jawline and for the first two passes run the razor at a 45 degree angle WTG/ATG respectively and this gives me a very close shave. Pulling the skin is another trick that has worked for me in the past, but my current technique is easier for me.

I had the same issue, my jawline and one spot on my neck was constantly giving me problems. No matter what I tried, I'd either not shave close enough or shave too aggressive. Tried light touch, different blades, but still I would get at least irritation and at most weepers and nicks. Then everything changed when I switched to cold water shaving. I have as close as a shave as before but with zero irritation, and I'm able to get everything smooth as can be by going xtg and atg without a problem. Give the CWS a try and see how that works... it's not for everyone but it's at least worth a try.

I was having the same problem with the jaw line...until I realized that my hair there doesn't grow the same direction as my neck or my cheeks. it grows directly chin to ear. So I go 3 passes. WTG (chin to ear) and 2x XTG (directly N to S and S to N).

Now if I can get the neckline hammered out I'll be getting consistently DFS.
