Shaving Oil

Hi Julian, first off, welcome to B&B.

Secondly, shaving oil is meant to be one of two things: a pre-shave treatment to soften whiskers, or some oils are actually used in lieu of soap/cream to be shaved with. In any event, they are to be used to aid in your shave.

Third, shaving oil is a huge YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary) kind of subject. Some people use it with varying degrees of success and swear by it, others feel it's a waste of time and money. Me personally, I've used it and have found it gums up my badger brushes pretty badly. Certain water based treatments, such as the Feather Pre-Shave, contain mineral oil, thusly cancelling out the "water based" factor altogether. Many of us have had great success using Kyle's Prep, which can be found here:

In any event, wet shaving is great because it's a real trial-and-error based way of shaving. You get to spend some money, try new things, and see what works best for you.

Happy shaving!

I even noticed something like this on NancyBoy's website. They warn against using their pre-shave oil with a brush.

I have been using Shave Secret oil for a while, and it doesn't gum up anything. Of course, I use it every so often, not regularly, usually when I've no time for a proper prep. It is only $3 or so a bottle, and has menthol. It works pretty well. I have no trouble rinsing my razor off, either.

I use the AOS Sandalwood PSO. I have to wash my hands before shaving, but that just gives it time to soften my beard as I wash the oily goodness off. I notice less irritation after using PSO.

I think that shaving oils act as lubricants so the blade can glide easier over the skin. It also nourishes the skin and keeps the irritation caused from soap or cream (which are alkaline) at a minimum.

I bought some One Planet shaving oil. Other than making it difficult to hold only my razor what is Shaving oil supposed to do?
