Shaving Mug Lathering

I like to bowl lather. I want to lather in a mug like I see all you pros doing in photos of overflowing mugs after 30 laps.

So I just got a shaving mug off the bay and can't for the life of me figure out how to build a good lather in the mug. Am I supposed to put the puck in and build on the soap? or what? Its got inundations on the bottom like the artisan scuttles you see from GP and Dirty Bird, but I can't figure out how to use this?

I used my AoS brush and the lather, after a while, is nice and thick, but its all inside the bristles! I need to SQUEEZE the thick lather out?!

What am I doing wrong?

so far i've used a wide mouth bowl (like a large cereal bowl).

1. put a tablespoon or so of water onto the puck in a cup
2. swirl water around until it becomes cloudy with soap
3. dump the water into cereal bowl
4. "seed" the tip of the brush by lapping the brush on the damp soap directly
5. go round and round and round in the cereal bowl

suds go from macroscopic (size of a dime in diameter) to microscopic and I start to hear the soothing sound of thickening lather.

i tried to substitute the mug for the cereal bowl...no go. the lather is nice and thick, but is all in the brush and i have to squeeze it out?!

If I lather in a bowl I use a separate one. I feel building a lather on a puck reduces its life. I do basically the same as you but I really work that brush on the puck, swirling, twisting, and plunging. The brush is pasty then I move to face and sometimes bowl.

What soap are you using? I like using a bowl and recently purchased a Dirty Bird Scuttle. Your method isn't exactly like mine, but I see no reason why yours wouldn't work. The right amount of soap and water makes lather, RIGHT?!?

Start by soaking your brush in hot water. After flicking some of the excess water from the brush, begin "brushing the soap" in its container so as to absorb soap into the brush. Swirl it around on the soap to soak it up into the middle, and brush it sideways to saturate the sides of the bristles with thick soap similar to washing your hands. When you wash your hands, you begin by wetting your hands and rolling the soap over and over in your hands to build up a thick layer of soap. After the soap feels built up just right, you begin adding water and start rubbing your hands together over and over all over so as to cover both hands with cleansing soapy suds. Then you rinse them off with the confidence your hands are clean, and dry them with some sort of towel and hang it to dry.

Treat your brush the same way. The difference here is you want thick creamy lather instead of suds. After loading up your brush with thick soap, add about a teaspoon of hot water into a cereal bowl, and begin swirling your brush around the inside of the bowl making sure to soak up the added hot water. Keep pushing your suds down towards the bottom center of the inside of the bowl as you swirl so as to keep adding moisture to the brush while adding soap from the brush to the bowl. Swirl your brush around and around in this manner as your lather begins building up on the inner sides of your bowl. Keep pushing your lather down into the bowl while swirling to create a consistent thick mixture. You should easily create enough thick creamy lather for a Great Shave! I hope this helps. Thanks for the opportunity.

I'm just the tiniest bit confused here, gentlemen. This fine fellow says in his OP that he already bowl lathers, and is asking about lathering in a mug. The follow on replies tell him how to lather in a bowl. Not trying to be a smart *** here, but am I missing something?

I'm pretty new at the whole lathering thing myself...
