Shavette And Barber Razor Enthusiast (SABRE) group

I tend to call it a barber razor so not to offend some purists that say only a specific Dovo model barber razor is called a shavette.
I am not that picky but I respect that some people feel that way.

Context always matters. On the rare occasion it comes up with non-shaving-obsessed people, I'm careless enough to say I use a straight razor. On the even rarer occasion that they're at all interested, I'll provide more accurate terminology.

These Personna Shaper Blades are just as sharp as the Kismet blades, but they are just not as smooth. I'll have to order more Kismets I've still got almost 2 packs of the Personnas but I'm down to 4 Kismets.

I've also got 2 more Wecks inbound but they'll be a while as they're coming from the US.

Likewise....I have 2 maybe 3 incoming.....But hello. My name is Brian and I have a problem Something else managed to sneak in the door. (Photo is rubbish but it is off the Vendor site.) I am rather busy with Blood Bike Shifts at the moment ....so it is a 1 pass cart shave at the moment for me I am afraid. This will appear in due course.

Tondeo Sifter-Ergo

It looks similar to a razor @Dave himself owns but uses the standard TSS3 blade instead of a cartridge

I like the look of that one better than mine.

I totally agree.
When talking with people who are not into traditional wet shaving, it is just easier to say I shave with a straight razor than try to explain the Feather DX. :biggrin1:

The latest edition to my stable as mentioned above.......the Tondeo Sifter-Ergo

The same Blade System as the Stainless Sifter but with an ergonomically designed handle in Plastic. The Type 77 blades will not fit this razor but can be used if the insert is modified. Will have it's inaugural run out tomorrow

I have been trying a Feather clone lately as my entry into shavettes. Didn't want something really expensive and didn't want to use half DE blades. I've heard DE shavettes are a lot sharper and harder to learn.

I've got about five shaves with my Feather clone with Kai pro touch blades. Chin area is hard to go against the grain but I've had no issues with my mustache area. My whole face feels irritated, even with a two-pass shave. My neck hair also grows E-W so ATG seems impossible there.

I've watched a lot of videos on using a shavette but not sure what I'm doing wrong. I've got the lightest tough I can use while still being able to cut hair. Any thoughts or advice? I'm going to give it a few more goes and if it doesn't work out I might just PIF it.

I've never tried the pro touch blades but if they are guarded that could be the problem. I only used guarded blades for a short time and didn't really like them. For me the unguarded blades were much better although you really have to concentrate the whole shave or you will get nicked.

The half DE blade shavettes have the advantage of you can put in your favourite DE blade. But I found them the least favourite of the formats I've used so far. It's because a lot of the half DE shavettes don't cover the corners of the blade and for me they had a tendency to dig in for no apparent reason.

I know a lot of the guys on here really like them. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to give you help.

I forgot to mention.

Don't give up your only at the start of your journey with shavettes. It takes time to get comfortable with them.

Perhaps try doing your with WTG pass at the start and do the rest of your shave with a DE. Do this until your getting good shaves with no irritation. Then you can move on to XTG and ATG.

Try not to get frustrated we've all been where you are now and had to stick with it to get close to the shaves we wanted.

Keep us informed on how your going. Don't worry you will get there.

I've only been a dedicated shavette user for the last seven months or so, so take my opinions with that in mind:

I've heard DE shavettes are a lot sharper and harder to learn.

Feather Pro Super AC blades are as sharp as any blade I've messed with. I suspect DE shavettes get that reputation because they flex more.

My neck hair also grows E-W so ATG seems impossible there.

The crease in my neck does this too. Diagonal to against the grain gets me a pretty good shave there.

I've got the lightest tough I can use while still being able to cut hair.

I'd suspect the angle of blade to skin then. I try to go as shallow as possible and still cut whiskers. My facial hair emerges at an extremely low angle in some places, so I've got to go very steep WTG in those spots, but I still try to only go as steep as it takes to cut. The reverse is true ATG in those spots: very shallow.

So I basically scrape shave my mustache WTG, but ATG the blade is practically parallel to the skin surface.

I got a Weck razor though the generosity of @JL 52 and set of coincidences. Our friend here went the extra mile by gifting me a pack of persona blades as it would have been impossible for me to get them at my country.

Thank you my friend again.

I tried Weck razor after some years of Shavette usage again. I cleaned it with alcohol and tried to remove the rust with sandpaper. I find this type of razor a bit too aggressive but the shave went well. I admit that I was extra careful and I got two tiny weepers still.

Weck razor
Persona blade (1st)
Arko soap
Yaqi 26mm synthetic brush.

Waiting for the second shave with this razor.

I've heard a few of the Straight Razor users say that the Weck shaves like a traditional Straight. How do you find it?.

I am no expert on straight razor, I have shaved less than 20 times with them and this is the first nice shave with Weck. I can say that the style of shaving seemed similar to me. Somehow the weight of the weck doesn't resemble that of a straight razor in my beginner's opinion.
