Shavemac D01- Worth it?

Hey Folks,

I'm looking for a replacement for my Shavemac 177 after using it religiously for 4 years. The only real problems I had with it was that I would have liked a bit more backbone and did not like the fact that the brush tended to suck lather into it as opposed to onto the face.

I came across discussion regarding the Shavemac D01 line and was wondering if anyone could comment on it. Is it worth it? Do you think it would address my concerns?

Also how do people feel about the fan-shaped version of it?

As long as you request a shortened 45mm-50mm loft, it will have much more backbone than your Silvertip. However, it is also much more dense, and so you will only have much more trouble with lather hogging. This problem can be solved by using more product and more water when lathering.

Alternately, I would recommend a Simpsons Duke 2 in Best. I think it could solve all of the issues that you have with your current Shavemac.

I really like my D01 (50mm loft). I used it all last week and probably will this week, too. I face lather (Palmolive shave stick lately), and I have no lather hogging issues. You just have to use more product with a really dense brush. It you want soft tips with lots of backbone, I heartily recommend a D01 with a 45mm loft.

I've had my shavemac d01 2 band for about two weeks now. The knot is 24mm x 48mm. It has incredible backbone and lathers triple milled soaps with ease. I did notice it was a bit of a lather hog at first but it has gotten better. I am using more product with it. When I first got it there was quite a bit of scritch that irritated my skin to the point I looked like I had a sunburn after face lathering. After 7 uses and a few test lathers the scritch is gone but the backbone is definitely there.

Good to hear. I am using my D01 2-Band this week as well. It is a soap-killer and a great brush.

I have a 3 band shavemac d01. It has the exact same properties being 25x50mm. The lather hogging has decreased while the flowthrough has become noticebly better during the first 20 shaves. The backbone is significantly more pronounced than in my 23x53 shavemac in finest.

I have a couple of D01 3 bands and they have lots of backbone. One is a 22 the other a 24 (though they measure 23 and 26). The larger one feels a lot scrubbier and does not have as good a flow through.

not sure if you're looking into 2-band or 3-band. In short, based on what your concerns are (need more backbone and not hog lather), your best bet is a 2-band in fan. Keep the knot to loft ratio as close to 1:2.2 as possible.

If you want a lot more scritch, go with a 2-band in flat-top. Best flow-through of all my brushes and plenty of backbone. Lot of scritch though although 3 dozen uses it has softened up some. backbone still remains. Knot is 22/45
