I saw a post where someone mentioned aftermarket plastic containers for shave sticks. Can anyone recommend a certain brand or style, particularly for travel ? Also, where's the best place to purchase them?

Yup. Those. I have two. I put a Palmolive stick in one and a melt & pour Colonel Conk lime in the other.

+1. I use these with Arko sticks.
I have a similar one but instead of the twist bottom, mine is a pushup stick. I find it great because there is no stem running through the middle so it makes it easier to pack the soap in without the risk of breaking the stem and also without the risk of the soap getting stuck when the twist can't manage to push the packed soap up.
I don't know where to buy them and I have been looking for a long, long time! My one is from a QED soap stick. The soap burned my face and was removed from the tube and replaced with MWF.

Or just reuse empty deodorant tubes.
If you do this make sure the bottom guide piece is solid without any holes (other than the one for the stem) in it. I tried to make a shave stick with a Suave deodorant container and ended up wrecking the container because soap ended up in the gears that make the soap move. I now have a VDH stick without a container due to this mishap. Oh well, live and learn and this one didn't really cost me anything as I needed the deodorant and will use the shaving soap anyway.
