Shave soap--What's in a name?

My wife is starting to make handmade soaps, and is going to try her hand at shaving soaps, as well. She's trying to come up with a name, and has settled on "Shimmer". She's not sure guys would buy shave soap by this name, though. I told her Nancy Boy was a popular product around here, so Shimmer wouldn't be a name to worry about. What do you guys think?

Nancy Boy seems like more of an ironic name, even a challenge, or at least a declaration that you like to take care of yourself and don't care what people call you for it. Shimmer just reminds me of unicorns and Bratz dolls. I'd, personally, keep searching, but if her soaps are good enough she can name it just about anything she wants.

My suggestion:

Lumberjack Shave Soap

I'd let her use "DavyRay's Best", but then, I'd have to get free samples.:001_smile

Thanks for the input guys. I'm seeing this from a new perspective now. I've decided I'm not naming it Shimmer. My son was right...he said it reminded him of "Hollywood glitz and glam" or "A cute little girl's dance troupe". He suggested Bay Harbor, but I don't know about that. And no, I'm not a Twilight fan either.

I just want a name for this endeavor that's catchy, appropriate for men or women, unique and not necessarily about soap making. I'm at a loss, but at least I have another month to think on it. If any of you get an awesome idea, just let me know.

Well, the name of your product is an important part of your branding. What's your vision for the soap line - all natural? high quality? low cost? artisan made? what's the scent going to be?

Basically, if you know how you're going to market the product, the name should follow pretty quickly. If you can't decide on a name, you may need to work some more on what your target market is, and what they want to buy.

"Shimmer Shaving Soap" is also plain hard to say. Plus, it sounds like some kind of make up. I gotta give a "nay" vote on that one. Good luck to your wife tho, with the product.

You could make it cool and exotic just by changing up the letters a bit. What was once dull, crappy, boring soap is now mysterious, alluring šœp.

Branding is one of my favorite things as a design student hoping to work mostly in commercial interiors. Throw out some ideas/inspiration/keywords that help describe the general "feel" you're going for and I'll see if I can dream something up for you.

I must agree with you all, Shimmer was a bad idea. I have scratched it off my list for sure. I really appreciate all of the honest replies.

I'm making my soaps from all natural ingredients and most of them are also organic. I want to use recycled packaging, so my target will be people that like homemade products that are made of natural and/or organic ingredients as well as being great for the environment.

Which is why my son recommends going with our family name for the soaps and to keep it simple (not glitzy or modern one word names) and to bring back a nostalgic connection to doing things naturally and responsibly. Long story short, I may just use Thompson's Old World Soaps.

But, _MementoMori_ you can feel free to brainstorm if you would like.:001_smile
The feel i'm going for is old fashioned, good for you, natural soaps for a great price.

That sounds classy.

I think that's a winner right there - every good product on B+B needs a nickname or an acronym, and "TOWS" fits in well here.
TOWS. I like it! IMHO, YMWDNV (Your Mileage Will Definitely Not Vary):lol:
Well, because everyone will love it, of course!:thumbup1:
Of course, I'm hopelessly biased toward the soap maker! Can't wait to try some of this stuff out!

I think Bay Harbor soaps sounds nice. Your kid may be onto something.

I like it a lot better than Thompson's Old World soaps; no disrespect to your family name.

If you decide to use Bay Harbor, though, just make sure not to spell it "Bay Harbour"; that would be pretentious (unless you happen to be British or Canadian).

But these are new soaps, made in the new world. :tongue_sm

Why not use Thompson's Bay Harbour Old Worlde Soaps?
