shampoo bars how long do they last

has anyone tried these brands of shampoo bars, jr liggetts, chagrin valley, mystic waters, or queen charlotte? any opinions on them or which one you think is better?

which brand of shampoo bar lasted the longest to you out of the brands above or the ones that you personally tried?

for people who use shampoo bars that have short hair, is apple cider rinse really necessary?

thanks

I've tried mikes and mystic waters. Mikes lasted about 6 weeks. Mystic Waters lasts about 10 weeks. I use the rinse about once a week or just put some conditioner in it. Over time I feel like I need the rinse less and less. I use mystic waters exclusively how and won't go back to the chemical sludge again

I've used Chagrin Valley. It was just alright. It felt no better or worse than using Dr. Bronner's as both a hair and body bar. I don't remember how long it lasted, though.

It's been a while since I used JR Liggets but I seem to recall getting about 4 weeks out of a bar. It didn't help that I kept the bar on the caddy just below the shower head.

I use QCS every day and I'm very happy with them. They can last a very long time depending how much you 'load' on your head. I think I probably use 4 bars a year.

Liggett's: 100-150 shampoos per bar
I started shampooing with Liggett's Jojoba Peppermint in the 4th week of September. 7 weeks x ~5 shampoos per week = 35 uses, and I'd say the bar is 1/4 - 1/3 consumed. At that rate, it appears I'm getting between 100-150 shampoos on the Liggett's bar. You really don't need much to get a rich lather fast.

Cider Vinegar Rinse: 1-2/week
I find I use apple cider vinegar (ACV) to rinse perhaps once or twice a week.

The main reasons for ACV rinse: skin (including scalp) and hair are naturally slightly acidic, and shampoo bars leave them slightly alkaline (Liggett's production process utilizes lye, although there should be none left in the soap), so the cider vinegar rinse returns the hair and scalp to natural acidity. This helps close down the hair plates, leaving softer, more manageable, shiny hair. ACV helps remove soap (and other) residue from hair and scalp.

ACV has been used for it's many health benefits at least as far back as Hippocrates.

I've been using a natural (unpasteurized, live culture Bragg) ACV, and I've found the combination with Liggett's has really improved my scalp health and comfort. I tend to get dandruff and light psoriasis, and this combo is really great at managing it. One of my theories, based on the growing body of research about the benefits of healthy, balanced symbiotic flora: restoring natural pH and flora to the scalp combats one of the causes of dandruff/psoriasis, which is believed to be undesirable bacteria and fungii.

My one issue: after the cider rinse, rinse yourself off really well. Even then, I sometimes get a whiff of ACV, so I make sure to use hair oil and AS/ASB with fragrant essential oils.

^ I use a vinegar rinse once a week, too, as does my wife. We both concur that it's amazing for the scalp. I don't notice much difference in my hair from it.

I am currently using Hanz de Fuko Natural/Organic Shampoo and Conditioner and my hair is doing great from it, but the stuff is VERY expensive and considering how short my hair is I'll likely go back to just using castile soap to wash out my hair later on. I'm just trying the shampoo + conditioner because of a special price deal I got from them last month.

Like most issues of "how long does x last," many variables are involved. For shampoo bars longevity probably depends on what size bar you start with, how often you shampoo, and how much lather makes you happy. In the case of many shampoo bars letting the soap drain dry and protected from water between uses is pretty important. The bars' softness makes them susceptible to water erosion.
My experience anyway.

So what happens if you don't use a vinegar rinse? I mean is it really horrible not to do one?

No, not at all. As a matter of fact, I use the ACV rinse because I've seen it so widely recommended and I enjoy it, not because I feel any build up or change in my hair and scalp. I've probably not gone more than a week or 10 days without it, although I wouldn't even say I felt any change or build up or that I needed to use the vinegar rinse. Just sort of going with the program, and enjoying it. Although I probably will experiment at some point and see how long I go before I detect any change or build up without the ACV. The ACV leaves my scalp feeling a bit more... refreshed, and my hair looking a bit more lustrous, naturally wavy.

And, as others have pointed out: let your shampoo bar dry out!! Keep it in a soap dish/holder which keeps it high and dry, drains away water and leaves the soap open to the air. This dramatically extends its lifetime, by as much as 50% I'd estimate. For the past few weeks I've been keeping mine in a soap dish I have to remember to manually drain at the end of the shower, and when I've forgotten, the puck got waterlogged, soft, and when I used it the next day I felt like I couldn't help but unnecessarily use a double or even triple portion.

And, as yet others point out, YMMV re: # of shampoos per bar. I have medium length, not very oily hair, and use just enough soap (lightly rubbing the puck in a circle around of the crown of my head three times) to get a fairly rich lather as I gently scrub with a scalp brush for 10-15 seconds.

REVISED # SHAMPOOS ESTIMATE:
I just compared a new bar of Liggett's to the puck I've used for ~8 weeks. I had guesstimated I'd used only 1/3. In fact, comparing the new vs. remaining puck, I've used ~2/3. In which case it should last me about 11-12 weeks, or 77-84 shampoos in total. (Sorry for that previous estimate based on insufficient data.)

Here's a photo of my Liggett's Shampoo (Peppermint Jojoba) Bar @ ~8 weeks use vs. a new bar. Behind is my apple cider vinegar, in a cleaned condiment squeeze bottle, about 1 part ACV to 5 parts water.

I shampoo about 2x's a week, just rinse the other days to ensure no dust / other stuff in my hair and my wife washes her hair daily, our bar of Mike's and we have had it for three weeks so far, and it still has a while to go.

My bars from QCS last around 4 months a piece with daily shampooing but I'm what you might call "folliclely challenged" pretty thin up there!

My experience anyway.

This is critical. Don't let them stand wet, and don't let them have water from the shower run over them.

Mine last forever since I have pretty short hair and shampoo infrequently.

+1
I have short hair and keep mine up high above the shower head and it lasts around 4 or 5 months ( i do shower at the gym a lot though). On the same hand my sis asks if I even use it since she blows through hers.

I began using jr Liggets about 3 weeks ago and did the rinse once, although I didn't notice too much difference. Using it twice a day, there is still about half a bar left.

I just started using Michelle's shampoo bar (Mystic Waters) and love it. It's been about six weeks and I've only put a small dent in it. I love the herbal smell.
