Shameless eBayers

While cruising the bay just now, I saw a Star 1912 razor in fair condition listed at $120:001_huh:
And a Gillette old type in horribly mangled condition (bent teeth, warped top plate, corrosion, just a mess) for $99:blink:

Crazy Eddy's prices are INSANE:w00t:

That's the reason I have never purchased any vintge razors

I used to think the same until I started looking and buying them off BST...there are some very good prices on vintage razors there, plus everyone I've dealt with has been great.

+1. But there are deals to be had if you do look around. For me though, I find it far more rewarding to go hunting in the real world, than scrolling through the bay

Ebay sellers are a mixed lot. Some will ask ridiculously high prices for very ordinary items, whether it's from ignorance or dishonesty doesn't really matter if you're ill informed enough to pay what they want. Others get less than they could for rare items because they don't know what they are, and don't describe them properly. You'll run into the same thing in brick and mortar antique stores. Either way, it pays to be patient, learn something about razors first, and not grab the first thing that you see.

Some people prefer the "excitement of the hunt" in the real world. Personally, I find going from store to store very tedious, and have done very well on eBay. Got a couple of razors on B/S/T as well, and from a couple of other Internet sources.

Crazy Eddie!!! You must be from NYC!!!

Do you remember his competitor Meshugana Ike's?

Really? It can be hit and miss at first, but after a while, you can make fairly good judgments.

My wife and I like going to flea markets, estate sales and vintage stores. Flea markets and estate sales are some if the ebay input streams.

And finally, what Slivovitz says. There is no way I would have obtained in my life, some of the razors I now have. For example, finding British made razors around here is like finding a $100 bill on the sidewalk.

I too have seen some ridiculous prices for very common razors. And good buys on the bay are possible if you are not in a hurry.

I still remember at the end of the tv ads how he'd try and hold perfectly still as if the camera was on freeze frame. And you could see him wavering:lol:

That is the key. Looking at large lots is a good bet as well. Sometimes great deals can be found that way. I bought a lot of 13 SuperSpeeds. It had a mint light blue lady, a mint Krona, a decent Ranger, and a near mint red tip. Plus the others all for $35.00. They are out there.

ebay is v hit and miss.

ive got great stuff for super cheap, and seen rubbish stuff go for super expensive.

Not in a hurry, fairly consistent checking and sometimes - with ebay - taking some risk. We have all heard the stories of folks who stepped into their first ever vintage shop and pulled out gold. But in my case, I have to put in the time. I've been well rewarded for that though. In the case of local shops, expanding the folks that I know is one reward. And yeah, a Double Ring, slims, super adjutables, NEW Deluxes, etc.

With ebay, you got to look. The worst I can say about ebay is that I got the chance to bid on some fantastic razors!

I've always said, "Nice razors are where you find them".

I love that. :thumbup1:
