What's new

Sexy as James Bond

We all know some of the reasons for us to buy and use a straight razor, jimps, gold etching, spanish point and we are suckers for it. What I would like to know is what does your wife or other think about your new way to spend money, does she think that you are that much sexier for shaving with a straight razor. Are you doing it for you, or them. I know some women who think that kinda thing is super sexy, so I'm asking what does your other think about your straight razor shaving. Does she think you are that much sexier for it, or does your wife think, that you think that your razor is sexier than her. Are we as sexy as James Bond.

Absolutely.... not, she totally wants me to stop and sell my stuff. She thinks i've lost my mind and in over my head and can't get out, dont know how to get out. I explained yesterday about a new grinder and forge and she just about divorced me.

My girlfriend thinks I will slice my neck open. Also she thinks I have an addiction... and wonders about my mental sanity. So no nothing sexy...
I also don't straight shave for others, that sounds like the saddest thing in the world. If you honestly need to pick up straight razor shaving to feel better about yourself, then that is something you need to work on. I shave with a straight because it is fun, and I love the nostalgia of it. Plus its cool :wink2:

I’m stumped
My better half does not think I am any more sexy due to the straight razor but she has commented that my face is better since I started.
Not to miss a beat I added it was also the soap and aftershave that is helping. Got to justify the collection somehow

I'm basically in the same boat as Jon with respect to spousal opinion. I'm not at the grinder and forge stage yet, but he has also been into straights a couple years longer than I have. When she gives me the hairy eyeball, I'll sometimes turn it back on her. My approach to straights is reflective of my approach to life, so this sort of behavior shouldn't come as a surprise to her. I just ask her, "What's more weird, that I'm into stuff like this, or that you agreed to marry me knowing I'm into stuff like this." At least after that, I can hone in peace.

My girl digs all of it. Loves the razors, the smooth shaves, the stones and my honing too.
She has her own straight, a set of Jun Mikawa Nagura, and a Coti bout, as well as 3 vintage DEs, a few brushes and several choice soaps.

I am imagining that the OP is not a married man, correct?

Once married you will be ridiculed for shaving with a straight razor, you will be ridiculed for not shaving with a straight razor, you will be ridiculed for growing a beard, or for not growing a beard. Once married, you become the whipping boy of derision.

You will notice, James Bond is not married. If he was, I'm sure his wife would mock his tiny little Walther PPK.

Marriage is the great equalizer in the race of the sexes. For every chauvanistic CEO there is a women cutting him down to size at home.

My wife is to the point now where she rolls her eyes and stops listening whenever there is any mention of shaving. Thinks I'm nuts or obsessed...

Totally agree. Ridicule it is

My wife don't really care. And if I'm home honing she knows I'm not out snortin coke off of a stripper. I love the maintenance of straight. Shaving with a razor you honed is the best. And of course the shave rocks.

Yup. I have been DE shaving and a member here for 1 month. My wife of almost one year is 4 weeks pregnant. If I even talk about razors.......she pretty much wants to cry.

My boyfriend prefers that I have a full beard and he sometimes complains when I shave. He thinks it's fun to lather my face after a shower though, so he's not totally against the hobby. Don't know if he finds the blades sexy or if he associates it more with depressed Japanese school girls.

Ask him, will be interested to hear the answer from a fellow man who is not a wet-shaver (be awkward for me to ask one of my mates).

I doubt my wife thinks shaving with a straight razor makes me sexier but she's interested when I talk about it.

I guess it's all in the presentation but I think there are a lot of interesting topics of discussion about straights:

  • Different types of grinds.
  • History of a particular manufacturer.
  • Different kinds of hones.
  • Different honing techniques.
  • Stropping.
  • Etc.

I think it's like any other hobby that only one person in a relationship has. If your SO isn't interested in this hobby they'd probably not be interested in any other hobby that they don't personally pursue.

Oh, and to answer the specific question: I do it for me, it's taken shaving from a chore to a pleasure. She likes the results.

My wife is the one that got me started. She said that when she was a little girl, she loved to peep into the bathroom and watch her dad lather up and shave.
Having said that, I don't think she considers it sexy. But she doesn't say any thing about me having Razors, AS, Fountain Pens, out the ***...
