Semogue Badger Brushes

I have a Semogue 1305 on its way to me and since I like that handle shape, I was wondering how their silvertip badger brushes compared to other brushes, like Vulfix superbadger or Savile Row. For one, they look like they have a pretty high loft. Are they mop-like?

Dave

Thanks Escosse. I think my comment was misunderstood. I'm actually a BIG Semogue Boar guy. But I was responding to the OP's question about Semogue Badgers.

The two Silvertips I've got are comparable with my other Silvertips in regard to softness of the tips.
My Shavemac D01 and Simpson PJ2 are both more prickly than my Semogues. The Semogues however are not as densely packed as the D01 and PJ2.

If I should recommend you are Semogue badger, it would be the Semogue Owners Club 2-band, finest.
It has a handle design like the 1305 just a bit larger, the knot is very densely packed which gives it great backbone and the tips are comparable with the D01 and PJ2 if not slightly softer.

Pictures and data for my SOC 2-band here.

DavidB, listen to Soren! He is the definitive expert round here when it comes to Semogue brushes. Probably because I think he owns them all!

Thanks, Soren. Great input. The SOC 2-band is a lovely brush. That cherry wood handle is so elegant.

I'm a little cautious however. I've never had a 2-band brush. I bought a 2-band replacement knot, but ended up selling it. I tried some test latherings, but as a face latherer it was too prickly. That might have been the quality of the knot. What I'd be hoping for is something that has super-soft tips and doesn't splay out too much.

I will put in another rec for the SOC 2-band. It's easily my favorite badger. It won't splay much at all and the tips will soften with use. Most say that badgers don't break in like boars do, and I tend to agree with that. However, my SOC 2-band was pretty scritchy to start but the tips are softening up nicely with each use. If you can either deal with the scritch to start or just plan on doing some test lathering, then it could very easily become your favorite badger as well.

I think expert is an exaggeration to be honest (but thank you for the trust in me :001_smile), I just like Semogues brushes and have tried a lot of them, and if you look around you will notice that my opinion on the brushes are challenged or differs from other gentlemen's experience - which I think is great actually, because it underlines the differences the way we individually assess brushes.
I don't own all - yet. Still miss some badgers, but I must admit I got all of the current boar line (well, the last two is still in the mail, but...) :blushing:

OK, you face lather and you don't like a prickly brush - in that case I will recommend the Semogue Owners Club 2-band :biggrin1:
I mean that in all seriousness. The SOC is dense which gives it a great backbone, it doesn't splay much and the tips in both the ones I got, are softer than some of my Silvertips including a PJ2 and Shavemac D01.
The prickliness isn't more than a very slight massaging feeling IMO.

I'm just working on a comparison test of some 2-bands brushes, you can check that thread out when I get it posted - if nothing else to see my sentiments on the differences.

Both my 2-band brushes (a SOC and a New Forest) softened up after a dozen uses or so - not the way boar brushes do, but certainly noticeable.

I think Semogue badger brushes are some of the nicer and more interesting ones out there.

I only have 3 badger Semogues but look forward to seeing the 2012 LE (I already claimed it as a sabbatical exclusion) and hope a badger is offered.

The 2011 Badger LE has some scritch but I love it for that reason. The 2010 LE and SOC 2-band have no scritch.
